Random Thoughts... [Automotive Edition]

Painting a car with Rustoleum with a roller.

I don't even know where to put this. Seems like the paint is very orange peel, but the coverage is good and for an old van like that, I can see doing this to save some money and get a few more years out of it.

Today I learned of the:

@Nugget

So I guess it's a full size Transit then?

The normal Nugget is built on the Transit Custom.

This idea has been around awhile. I've always been curious about it. There's a lot of sanding between coats to get a flatter, less orange peeled finish. Maybe I should try it on my Hardbody?

Not a million miles away from what I did with the bobtail, in fact as that's basically an enamel paint it's the standard Land Rover painting procedure. When I got the Series III it had been painted with a brush, which also isn't uncommon!

Never going to look amazing on a modern car but it covers all sins pretty well and it'll sand out to a smooth finish if you really want to go to that extreme.

The Raptor I used is a much thicker coating that holds the roller texture, now I think about it maybe I should've added thinners to make it less sticky and let some of the texture settle out. I'm still happy with the result and it's very tough.

Unrelated, the Caterham online configurator is, sadly, dog shit. Whatever is running it just can't provide what most of the buttons link to and it keeps stalling on the loading page.

No word on cause yet? This sounds horrific.

Yeah, I think a brush will come out looking less orange peel than a roller like the Honda van video.

Authorities said the blaze appeared to have been accidental and began in a parked car, believed to be a diesel vehicle. The fire caused part of the recently built development at London’s fifth biggest airport to collapse.

It started at about 9pm on Tuesday and was extinguished by 9.30am on Wednesday,
Hopkinson said there were no sprinklers in the car park and firefighters were advising the airport to ensure they were fitted

I'm almost impressed that it was a diesel, since liquid diesel isn't even combustible at normal temperatures.

Couple of years ago a Zafira took out a car park in Cork, Ireland

The fire that melted the airport parking structure in Stavanger, Norway was also started by a Zafira. Of course people pointed fingers towards EVs at first.

It’s the heater motor resistor on the B generation Zafira that gets a bit burny and melty on occasion. GM has recalled the car but failed to fix it.

There's a whole thread about the Zafira

Sergio Marchionne tv series, "Confessions of a Capital Junkie", in development, based on Tommaso Ebhardt's book.

rough machine translation:
while Rome-based Eliofilm will tell the human and professional story of Sergio Marchionne in the TV miniseries "Sergio Marchionne. Confessions of a Capital Junkie" by Roberto Amoroso and Ariens Damsi, inspired by the biography written by Tommaso Ebhardt who followed him for ten years and whom Marchionne himself acknowledged as "his most devoted stalker." "He was a huge character," Amoroso says, "capable of completely revolutionizing the automotive landscape in Italy and beyond. Now co-productions are being sought overseas. "We would like this story to be half Italian and half American."
