Random Thoughts... [Automotive Edition]

Soooo.... I just stopped at my local Cadillac dealer. They have a 2005 CTS-V in black with 3,xxx miles that's right in my price range if I were to sell my car and get about $20-22k for it.

Mother of god it's tempting... I know the interior trim isn't even comparable with the two, but power becomes a big factor.

I'm gonna test drive it tomorrow, I doubt I'll get the numbers to work out but it's fun to dream.

But, but it's a Cadillac! Suddenly the only chicks interested in you will be the senior citizen hotties.

By the way, who are you again? I haven't seen your here before. :tease:

Congratulations, Mr. Shawn, you win:

Absolute power corrupts absolutely... or something...

But, but the Volvo is just so damned nice...

Dude.. Put some cash into that Volvo engine instead..

Put the same amount of money into the CTS-V, and you get a 700hp monster.

^True.. I'd probably go for the Caddy aswell.. It's a shame that they are so damn expensive here..

Yeah, I still can't get over the interior quality of the CTS. I closed the door, didn't SLAM it, I closed it, and the trim panel shook like no other. It was so disappointing. I know complaining about the quality of American interiors is as old as fire, and in most cases (e.g. the Corvette) it's stupid because the car was built for power not comfort. But this is a Cadillac, it SHOULD be well made out of QUALITY plastics and leathers, and it's just not. It's disgusting.

For $3000, I could buy a new FMIC (the car desperately needs one as the factory two are pathetic), an engine tune, and a down pipe and that would yeild me anywhere between 70-120bhp. With the depreciation the R is suffering from, I may just do that and drive it into the ground...

If it was an estate, V70R, the decision would be a no brainer. R all the way:

The V70R is pure porn.. Especially with a few tasty Evolve parts on it!

The guy that bought my car for me at auction, owns that ^ the Swedespeed.com V70R. I'm sorta honoured to have had my R in the same drive as that car.

Drove the CTS-V today. It was nice, couple things drove me nuts about it. I firmly believe that a car that has a manual gearbox should have a proper HAND-brake lever in the centre console. But, seeing as they didn't care much about the interior when they built this car, they put the handbrake on the floor via a 4th pedal. So when you want to park the car you need to take it out of gear, let your foot off the clutch, depress the smaller (poorly placed, almost hidden) pedal, re-depress the clutch to put it in gear, and turn off the car. It's a stupid, complicated shuffle dance you have to do in order to complete a task that should be easy.

Power was great and torque was even better. On the highway you could really feel the weight of the car though as even dropping two gears would only result in a medium-steady pull. Around town however, the sound and pull was phenomenal. I got the feeling though that when I just wanted to get from A to B via city driving, I'd be lead footing it EVERYWHERE. It's impossible to drive that car at sub-40mph speeds slowly. On the motorway the 6-spd at 80mph was just above 2000rpms. That gives it great highway miles.

I took a guy I work with to test drive. In the end we both agreed, it was nice and had a lot of presence. But, in the end we just liked the R better.

^ What the hell, pedal E-brake with a manual is something I've never heard of. Even on the manual IS, which is Lexus' only manual and a horrible one at that, they have a lever style brake. The auto just gets the pedal style.

Anyway, the R is a lot nicer and offers something the Cadillac doesn't - understated class. The Cadillac on the other hand looks loud and brash. I would imagine the choice between the two would be easy, depending on which type of person you are. You seem like the former, No Boss. ;)

:?

What a stupid way to complicate something so simple.

Yesterday I saw a custom Range Rover called a Carmichael Commando. Not only is that possibly the coolest name for a car ever, but it looks like this!

:? It looks like the owner tried to replicate the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile, but forgot to redo the shape.

Go drive an old W123, W124, W126 or another old Merc. They all have them.

When I was younger I had 2 Matchbox models of the Carmichael Commando - a red and a black one :) At the time I didn't know it was based on a Range Rover.
