So, yesterday, looking at used cars (me? with my reputation?) ran into this Reliant Robin / General Lee ad.

It's apparently been bought from a salvage yard in Helsinki; the guy had taken it for a spin around the block but had never gotten around to fixing some of its issues. Anyway, since I noticed the website and name sticker remains on the car, I went googling a bit and found its earlier owner.

Apparently the car had taken part in a charity rally ("Robins to Riga", from Dover to Latvia via the Arctic Circle), and on the guy's website there are photos of the car being driven and repaired along the way. I emailed him, and asked if anybody had contacted him about his Reliant Robin languishing some 450 km:s north of where he had left it.

I got a reply today. He was very surprised to see it again after seven years (the rally took place back in 2004) and said it brought back a lot of memories. They had sold it to a Helsinki hotel porter for 100 euro (having paid 150 euro for it originally, it was in good running order back then); and it looks like it's done nothing but gather moss after that, except for having traveled quite a bit north. And yeah, it's gone up in value a bit

Original Times article of the rally

Went and test drove an '84 Toyota Celica GT-S last night. Can't believe how fun those cars are to drive with just 100hp on tap. Unfortunately the body on the car was extremely rough. Not a straight, rust-free panel on the car. Damn shame, I really want one of those.

noticed 2 strange things on the road today, maybe some of you car nuts can help me identify them

First is something that looks like a Unimog to me, but it was a civilian version since it has a "regular" plate (Military vehicles has special plates).... I didn't know they sold these?

Anyone know what the big white box on it could be for? Living in? :p

Iv'e seen that thing before, I even know were it 'lives' , it's NOT an unimog although it looks like one, and it's pretty old, no idea what it is but I remember seeing it and thinking it looked (very) Russian. UAZ? OERAL? Something like that, not to familiar with that stuff.
Box on the back seem to be livingquarters, much more recent then the truck it's built on though, I was thinking some kind of hardcore expedition vehicle, like Iveco does in the overland expeditions, only with much less money thrown at it :p

Concerning Unimogs, you can just buy them as a civilian, always have, they are quite expensive though and they realy are a very special beast so they are rare.

I was thinking Kamaz actually, Urals tend to have a Kenworth type nose and are usually military trucks, this looks like a flat nose. Could be a LAZ maybe?

See? FinalGear delivers again! The ammount of knowledge on automotive anything here is fenomenal, we should start charging money :p
Good call prizak.

LAZ gives me this and I believe (based on memory of it) that we have a winner:

Make a thread!

Not for the moment, it's getting a bit of work done, the engine and gearbox are excellent, and We have every single piece of paper from its history since the original title from when it was bought in noo-yawk. in feb. 1984. On the downside The rear shocks and drums are shot, it has a cracked rim and it needs new tires. Also, it has no stereo but that's an afterthought

As it stands in the shop now

Looks like a spot rickhamilton goes to shop for cars.

You may mock, but we've gotten better service there that on any other spot in the city, including the local Mitsubishi/Honda/Hyundai dealership.

Just saw an old white man trying to teach a Johnny Tran look-a-like how to pump gas.... into his (Johnny Tran's) riced Hyundai Accent.

Was quite a spectacle.

One thing I like about chinese car makers: They aren't afraid to put proper beige/tan interiors in cars.

Rick, what have we said about what you like?

I will be a ardent defender of beige! :p Feeling like I'm in a coal bin (black interior) or in a doctors office (gray interior) just isn't my thing :p
