Random Thoughts... [Photographic Edition]

Yeah, one of my first cameras was Canon Powershot S3 IS which could really only be set to ISO400 or lower. Any higher and you had so much noise, it was like an analog TV station poorly tuned in.

I have an old d50 I have just laying in a box. Still worked last time I checked. I could lend it to you if you want. Only trouble is one of my lenses died, and now I only have a 18-200 and a 50mm prime.

I guess I could live without the prime for a month or two. Actually, I haven't even tuched my camera in over a month, so I wouldn't probably miss most of my gear :D

@Matt2000 I concur on the D7000, excellent :-D

A 50mm prime is a FANTASTIC lens as a starting point because you can focus (heh) on other things instead of wanking the focal length and gives you a wider range of aperture to play and see what happens when you do.

That'd be great! Also, I believe a month or two would be enough time to get the hang of it and if you could lend me the 50mm prime as well, that'd be awesome.

That being said, my dad has an old Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 compact camera that has manual controls, as well as an 18mm conversion lens kit. I assume I could get the hang of basics of manual controls on that one first. However, as I am still curious about the world of DSLRs, some sort of learning tool for that field would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you @Tram13 for sparking an idea to fix my camera.

Aperture adjustment got stuck years ago and at that time I didn't find any hobbyist who had dug in to the problem (even if it was somewhat common one). Only solutions at the time were just new part, which was too expensive to be sensible. In the end it's a very simple fix and much more help was on hand now, so on to disassembly!

One feels screwed owning this thing. 26 screws to get to this point.

One more screw to get the adjustment setup on hand. Delightfully simple setup of open coils and a magnet you can just pull out.

All it needed was a bit of filing from corners of the magnet. And a bit of WD40 just in case. And success, I have a working camera again!

Photos aren't showing up there...

I is surprise. Google photos has become rather difficult. Especially with anything that's uploaded from phones. I link something, it usually works for some hours and then becomes unavailable to some (sometimes including me even). Then I'll just paste the same link again and things work. Granted, even getting those pictures to appear in albums is a hassle at the moment, these might be related...

Speaking of Nikon D7000, anyone want mine + Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8? 18k activations, absolutely mint (?) condition.

Glad to hear it's back in business!

Aw, this time... 5 years ago (shit really?) I was in Germany for the first time. Despite being with work collegues who wanted nothing more than to be home, I fell in love with this middle of nowhere town not too far from where Johann Gambolputty is from.

Did you manage to visit the final resting place of Johann Gambolputty de von Ausfern-schplenden-schlitter-crasscrenbon-fried-digger-dingle-dangle-dongle-dungle-burstein-von-knacker-thrasher-apple-banger-horowitz-ticolensic-grander-knotty-spelltinkle-grandlich-grumblemeyer-spelterwasser-kurstlich-himbleeisen-bahnwagen-gutenabend-bitte-ein-nürnburger-bratwustle-gerspurten-mitzweimache-luber-hundsfut-gumberaber-shönendanker-kalbsfleisch-mittler-aucher von Hautkopft? If I recall correctly his last surviving relative Karl Gambolputty de von Ausfern-schplenden-schlitter-crasscrenbon-fried-digger-dingle-dangle-dongle-dungle-burstein-von-knacker-thrasher-apple-banger-horowitz-ticolensic-grander-knotty-spelltinkle-grandlich-grumblemeyer-spelterwasser-kurstlich-himbleeisen-bahnwagen-gutenabend-bitte-ein-nürnburger-bratwustle-gerspurten-mitzweimache-luber-hundsfut-gumberaber-shönendanker-kalbsfleisch-mittler-aucher von Hautkopft of Ulm was also buried nearby.

I need more Alpine road trips.

So, as most of you who've been to the Roadtrip and Ringmeet might've noticed, I had a DSLR camera with myself. It's actually Joe's old Nikon D5100 he kindly sent me earlier this year as a present.

Now, he says the photos taken with the kit lens that came with it (AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR) were never quite sharp enough. I must admit, looking back at some pictures, it is indeed impossible to make a perfectly sharp image with that lens. Does anyone else have any experience with the same lens? He recommended me looking around eBay or something for a replacement lens, so I'm curious if I should go for the same lens or something different.

I also have a tele lens (AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G VR IF-ED) that doesn't seem to have the same problem, so it's not the camera itself.

First things first, have you tried it with the VR turned off? I have the same 55-200mm VR lens (bought used 10 or so years ago) and I was never quite happy with the images from that. I eventually realised that the VR was acting up and the optics would twitch whenever the shutter was fired.

I replaced it with a AF-S DX Nikkor 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR (VRII) lens that is a great all-round lens and that hasn't ever had the issue. My old D40 came with the old 18-55 DX without VR and although it was never a great lens (it's a kit lens so what can you expect?) it never had sharpness issues.

I think it could very well be the VR, I'll test it out further. Honestly, the only pictures I took without VR were taken on a tripod, so I should really check them out closely.

If you are looking for an alternative, it's worth looking for something with a better aperture range, I got a Sigma 18-50mm F/2.8 when I bought my D7000 as body only, they also do a Macro version and either should be available at decent prices used. With or without OS.

I've been thinking. That Z9 is my best shot at upgrading now I'm heading towards owning a house in the next few years and frankly it's the only camera that I believe is worth upgrading to (even the Z7 II lacks features that won't be obsolete in a year or two). I looked at used D6s and D5s and their prices are still very high despite not being close to the Z9 in terms of specifications, I think this is the point where mirrorless makes sense. I'm also not interested in another camera that requires an add-on battery grip, I've used one for years and I would prefer a proper integrated portrait grip.

Anyway, I'm going for it. I'll keep the D7000 and the 18-300mm DX lens as they aren't worth much used, I'll get this with the FTZ adapter and a 28-300mm FX lens, then get the 24-70mm Z mount later on. I'm not pretending that it'll make me a pro and I frankly have no intention of going pro with it, I'm also not pretending that this is a sensible purchase. I just have expensive tastes and I demand a lot from the kit I buy.

I'm looking forward to what I can create with it. Should be getting my pre-order in this week, no idea when they will actually start shipping them but the sooner I can get on ze list, the better.
