Random Thoughts (Political Edition)

Of course, can't make any meaningful legislation or agree on a budget to avoid a government shutdown, but let's pander to our base.

Well, until we have a charging network that’s consistent, and not a myriad of bull shit apps and differing kilowatt levels, I see their point. Plus until we stop treating electric cars like they’re perennial future novelties, I don’t want the limit of which power type I’m choosing.

That said, I know damn well why republicans are doing this and it’s not to “give the people choice.”

The house has passed several of these virtue signaling or anti virtue bills that go nowhere to appease their loony constituency. Three things: Race, LGBTQIA2S+, Future Shit (EV, Meat Alternatives, ect) These things drive Republican base crazy.

“We cannot expect vehicle manufacturers to build one car in California and another one for Pennsylvania. In areas like my district in central and western Pennsylvania electric vehicles are unable to perform in the mountainous terrain and lose range in high heat and in extreme cold.”

They could build or rebuild cars just for Pennsylvania like Cuba made do during the embargo.

I don't get this. Is the complaint that it's not as ubiquitous? Electrify America, Tesla... I really don't get the difference between what we have vs what's the "until"

The problem is, I can’t just pay at the station. I gotta have their app and an account, plus my vehicle has to accept their kilowatt level.

The latter is simply not true. The worst that will happen is that you get a slower charge than you’d like. Yes, in the us you still have the garbage situation with different plugs… (everybody else managed to standardize their way out of that). the app and account thing may still be true, but even Tesla’s new generation superchargers now have a credit card terminal.

Really? So the Opel Mokka-E I had august 2022 with 10% battery and I wanted to go charge it, having to give @leviathan a call to activate a charging station for me, that was a fever dream?

Or that time I had a polestar 2 in February 2023 and the only reason I was able to charge it overnight at an 11kw station was due to the rental company giving me an RFID chip? That too was a made up experience? I tried my contactless bank card and credit card to no avail. I didn’t have the app downloaded to activate said charging station.

When the experience is the same everywhere, like it is with diesel and gasoline, come back and tell me. Until then? It’s not ready. I am not getting 3 different apps just so I can charge across a country or vacation trip. I am not one to track my routes for the preferred fueling station. I use my vehicle, I need fuel, I fill up, I continue on. Why is this so difficult?

Yes, really. This
plus my vehicle has to accept their kilowatt level.
is simply not a thing and not the issue you just described.

Also: apples and oranges much? Send anyone who’s never fueled an Ice car to a gas station and see what happens… that shit sure as hell isn’t as intuitive as you seem to believe, just because you’re used to it.
Also also: the issues you describe are exactly what I stated in my post above still need work. Get a fucking grip and actually read what’s being posted before getting all annoyed and shitting your bad mood in here.

I've never had a problem with apps. This map has two filters one being free as in no payment needed.

I think you had a bad experience because you hadn't had the benefit of years of conditioning you got from gas stations.

Without the app of the charger how would you be notified of the charge? I guess that's where I get confused with wanting to pay at the plug. If you pay with a card would you then just sit there?

You're correct.

I’m frustrated when I’m thrown a map of charging networks, because I’ll still need that brand’s app to make it work. I Hope for the Tesla pay terminal model to catch on, would’ve liked to have it from the start. The different experience stuff is for me both the charging level, and the brand + app thing. I don’t want my phone to be part of this process.

I also currently drive for work more than an 11kw charger can give in 30 minutes, I don’t have charging available at home either.

In July i used a Tesla for a week, the best part was the supercharger as it allowed me to go and charge quick enough to then go home with a mostly full battery, but that was 30 minutes in each direction plus charging time. Closest 11kw chargers weren’t within walking distance at the time.

An 11KW charger is not a quick charger. That is what you plug into at home and let the vehicle sit overnight.

FWIW, Aldi Süd has a pretty sizeable network of charging stations where you can pay with your credit card. IIRC, the charger will show you a receipt on its screen and in case you need a printout, you can use your CC number to access a pdf on some server. The one time I used it, it was quick and very cheap as well.

Yes, and if my apartment in Breisach wasn't so shitty, its location was perfect for leaving an electric car overnight at 11kw charger a minute or two from my door, that was great. But that's not my case at the moment. There's charging stations, just not close enough I'd feel ok leaving a car overnight at, which also coincides with my feeling toward if I needed at least 60% for the following day and didn't have it. And yeah, I drive between Cologne, Duesseldorf, Dortmund, and sometimes Bonn and Eifel region too from where I live near Aachen. So, yes, I do need more a lot of times. That all said, at least 11kW is not my concern, it's simply getting the charger to give me the angry pixies.

This is good to know and I know @loose_unit uses one at a Lidl as they have.. free? or I think reduced rate at least 11kW chargers, that's good.

@93Flareside So for you, in your current living situation and job, an electric car or more precisely the charging infrastructure for electric car is not suitable. So what? That's why you drive a petrol car.

Sure, but I want to experience the electric car life. I'm told it's better, so it must be, yes?

What public charger is only 11 KWs?

If you really want to try an EV, rent one for a week.

I don’t know what’s bugging you these days, but I am pretty sure the bad mood isn’t the fault of any EV.

When the circumstances are right, one of those can easily be a better experience than an equivalent car with an ICE. Even a Renault Zoe can be a little bit of fun to drive and that’s nothing more than a small city car.

I think that if you had to live with an electric car for longer than a week it would be different. I'm not saying your life would be better but a different life.

It does seem misleading to print a map rather than instructions to download the app.
