Random thoughts.... [Tech Edition]

Anyone watch the keynote? Jobs was absolutely letting loose on the competition. I mean alright, you sold 15 million iPads compared to like 47 Galaxy Tabs in 2010, but there is something to be said for a bit of tact and humility and Jobs has none of that.

Then again, maybe the Android guys deserve it... a year after the original iPad we finally get a decent competitor in the Xoom and it only comes in one flavour at $800 to Apple's six flavours of iPad which start a lot cheaper.

To be fair to Samsung though, he purposely used a misquoted comment from them, that was pretty damm shady. Of course the mainstream media/apple fanboys wouldn't notice or care.

iTunes is really an OS X application ported to Windows, it sux much less on OS X (still sux). If they did same sort of tuning they did with iPhone 4 it shouldn't be quite as bad, it takes about a minute for the back up to happen on my phone (Windows based iTunes).

Is notification system really that important on a tablet?

It is to me, I'd be more tempted to multi-task on a tablet, esp coming from an Android device who's notification system makes it very easy to multi-task (I'm a chronically addicted instant messager so I have Trillian for Android open like 80% of the time.

And yes: iTunes still sucks. Apple really needs to stop layering features on top of the rotting 2001 era code underneath and start fresh, esp. on Windows. I half suspect they kinda like porting buggy apps to Windows (and creating really shitty Boot Camp drivers that cause people to have shit battery life/strange issues while in Windows) just to perpetuate the stereotype that Windows is crap. :/

It would be nice if Apple made a lightweight media player which would keep itunes and this programs libraries in sync.

This, or enabled some sort of mass storage mode or even MTP (my preferred method) so one could sync with WMP. That would be a cold day in hell though. :(

Which DVD playing software do you guys use? I need to reinstall and was wondering if there were any better alternatives than PowerDVD that I've been using forever?

VLC does not seem to work well at least not with the disk I wanna see now.

If you're running Windows 7, WMP should play DVD's right out of the box. No DVD plugins/software required.

And this was more of a general complaint as well, the iPhone needs a proper notification system even worse than the iPad does.
You, my friend will get NO argument from me on this one.
Is there a way to encrypt a folder on my mac to password protect it and not be able to open in it windows?
Umm there is some software that allows you to do that, it can make like a hidden virtual partition of sorts on your drive (it's Linux software IIRC but likely has a BSD OS X port) I just can't remember the name right now :(

I think you are a bit more of a power user than Apple had in mind for the tablets. I see tablets as passive devices, something you could watch a movie on or read a book or run some specific app that allows you to do your task. True multitasking doesn't really exist in the tablet world as it runs everything in full screen mode.

Got a better one for ya. If you install 64bit iTunes into a 64bit Win7 and then look at the Task Manager it will show up as a 32bit application.

You could always use TrueCrypt. It can create an encrypted partition, or an encrypted file which acts like a virtual disk once you mount it. Also has a nifty "hidden volume" feature that allows plausible deniability (i.e. a second encrypted volume in the same file/partition, whose existence is impossible to prove without the right password, even for TrueCrypt itself).

YES thank you that is what I was thinking!

Underage tranny goat porn?

I think the double-secret invisible encryption indicated something far more incriminating than regular old tranny goat porn.

With my iPhone 3G, backing up with iTunes was impossible. Even after a couple of hours it still never worked. I ended up disabling the backup feature completely (just a simple comand line). I enabled it again when I decided to switch to the iPhone 4. It's better now, although I've only plugged into iTunes a handful of times over the 8 or 9 months.

Which way does a gay tranny's door swing, exactly?

i believe that is answered on the video in the hidden volume that "prizrak" is trying to hide :p

iPad is beautiful and should be a in an art museum. Android is still relatively nerdy and unwieldy in comparison, even if it can "do more".

How do you even compare a piece of hardware to an operating system anyway?

It wasn't me trying to hide it :) I just couldn't remember the name of the software that allows it. I feel no shame for watching my

Like this:
Dude Core i5 is soooo much better than Windows 7, I mean it has more cores and the bridges are kinda sandy and stuff. 7 just has one core and some kind of air thingie....

My computer is acting slightly weird.

When I turn it on now, the BIOS logo screen lasts for about 30 seconds whereas previously it lasted for 2-3 seconds.

Any ideas?

Do you have any strange USB devices plugged in?

I'm not sure if it's right to be disappointed that reseating my hard drive cables and switching SATA ports seems to have solved my HDD problem. Now I don't need to buy a new one :(
