Random thoughts.... [Tech Edition]

The yellowing has always put me off clear cases, we use them in bulk on work phones. I don't like the texture of the case either.

The two-part Otterbox iPhone X case I had was excellent, a colleague has used Otterbox cases with great results too. Shame this one was crap.

To add to Quad Lock - SP-Connect is a similar system that I "bought into", their SPC+ case for the iPhone is very solid and I'm rather happy with it and the system so far. It has rather a lot of padding all around, gives a flat back on the phone, still allows MagSafe charging and has powerful magnets (arguably more powerful than the phone itself, sits really solidly on MagSafe mounts of all sorts)...

The only downside to me is its chunkiness, but then any case that offers notable protection and/or mechanical mounting will be like that.

I use SP-Connect on the motorbike, too. They made good progress in the past few years, before that I had a casee for some then-current Samsung that had far too rigid button on the side, making the phone nearly impossible to use.
Given the SPC case's significantly larger chunkiness over my regular case I actually only put it on when I ride.

My mom had several Otterbox cases, I've had one of them, and I found the quality... severely lacking. If you want good cases, Dbrand (yay stickers!) and Spigen are really good offerings. If you want to be able to mount your phone to anything, Quad Lock also makes excellent, albeit chonky cases.
I've been using Spigen cases since my Iphone 4. The few times I've deviated, I regretted it. The Neo Hybrid was always my favorite, though the 2-piece construction combined with the hole for my Note phones' S-Pen made for a failure point. I've had the "Rugged Armor for Note 9" since 2019, and have no reason to replace it.

I got a clear Otterbox-case for my iPhone 13 mini. and for some reason it has gotten bent, so I switched it out for a cheap generic brand ultra slim carbon fiber look case which I like.

I've been thinking, is there a way to set up your own personal backup for Apple devices? Basically, I want my iPhone to back up data (namely photos) on my NAS, if possible, automatically as soon as I'm on my home network. Is it possible to do such thing by using some third party service?

Also, I have a feeling I'm not using my NAS to the max. I use it as network-attached storage, but that's it. Are there any more things I can do with it? I've heard about Plex, and even if my hardware is too old and too weak to handle Plex properly, it made me wonder if there's more potential use for that thing than a fancy external HDD.

Finally, I might want to invest in a UPS. I currently have none, and I'm wondering if it'd be a good investment, not just for the server, but for my desktop PC as well, shall I ultimately decide not to sell it. Any recommendations on what to keep an eye on when looking for a UPS?

If you're still using TrueNAS, it looks like some people were trying this a few years ago:

I will say that this is precisely the kind of thing that lead me to just having Windows on the machine. It'll happily sit there and sync with iCloud using the (admittedly sometimes buggy but ultimately functional) iCloud Photos app. Being Windows means it can do anything I want it to and being beside me with a monitor plugged in means I can use it to view my CCTV software, play streams, record audio from my hi-fi and it's my main recording machine if I'm using my AverMedia recorder or if I'm screen recording my main PC with OBS and NDI.

It also controls the randomised images that appear on my Inky Impression screen, it just runs a PowerShell script every morning at 1am that replaces an image on my web space with a randomised one from a selected folder, currently it's cycling through old Jim'll paint it images again. The Pi Zero W on the back of the display boots up at 3am, downloads the image and displays it, then shuts down. Along with a new image every day it gives me a heads up that my SSL cert has expired, because the image doesn't change due to a failed download.

This is all beside the management of disks and data being much easier, IMO.

UPS is always a good investment. I really should have one, I brought an older APC Smart-UPS 1500VA home from work years ago that just needed a new battery, the only reason I've not got that and used it is because it's fairly loud. It's intended for a server room after all. Even if the UPS just acts as a big spike suppressor, you'll benefit somewhere along the line. Personally I would buy something from the APC Back-UPS series if I was buying new right now. I really should do that...

@Matt2000, I kinda wish that I stayed with Windows now, that's true. Even if I'm not a power user when it comes to Windows, I still feel far more familiar with it. That being said, Windows 10 is losing support soon, and I guess TrueNAS should be a bit more secure? I guess I could find some other benefits of TrueNAS for my use, but I'd have to come up with them, lol.

Also, your post just gave me some ideas what to do with old iPad screens! I have an old, broken iPad 2 somewhere that has a functional LCD, and I think I have an iPad 3 LCD somewhere, too. I'll see what sort of ideas I come up with for those screens.

Oh, and the Reddit post mentioned Nextcloud, it seems to cover what I need, but I'll have to look deeper into it as well.

@leviathan, thanks for that link, I'll try to set it up next week, when I'm back home.

Anyone have any experience with smart rings? As I’m still using a wildly inaccurate very cheap smart watch for things like step counter, I’m considering this (as most proper smartwatches are 200€+ and offer a billion functions and notifications I don’t need or want)

A quick browse shows me Temu nonsense (which seems far too cheap at 31€) but also some Amazon stuff at similar prices. Also also some other stuff at much higher price points.

Frustratingly just like with the smartwatches, there doesn’t seem to be some kind of happy medium…
Anyone use this sort of thing? I’m mainly attracted to the step counter and sleep analysis options. Having it waterproof and having a long battery life is bonus

much higher price points
I was expecting to see the 450€ Samsung offering behind that link 🤣

No idea, thosee rings seem super weird to me… cause I don’t see any advantage over a watch (yes I wear mine at night, no I don’t notice). but then I also have a crazy overpriced Apple Watch (and actually went into my first one wanting only sports and daily tracking, wasn’t interested in the rest, but now love it), so maybe I should keep my mouth shut.

"Aww, but he likes it!" - the excuse I've heard from so many pet owners about something their pet is doing that someone else doesn't like

I have a habit of reading comments under facebook ads, especially when it’s an opinion-splitting product like EVs. But printers are fun too. I’ve been seeing HP printer ads lately, either their ink tank printers (I guess some Epson patent ran out?) or cartridge printers with an ink subscription model. It’s hilarious to see disgruntled HP users in the comments telling them to fuck off. 😂 Apparently a new HP won’t print unless it gets to call home to ask for permission first?

And for the record, I still love my Brother where the “mac driver” is a couple kB and only contains a link that opens the Brother scanning software on the Mac App Store. If you don’t need that, you don’t need to install anything at all. And I don’t, since the device can deliver PDFs to Google Drive without involving computer software.

My Brother HL-L2360DW is been a rock star for over a decade. It's outlived two HP laser printers, and even though it's wireless, I've never once had it "drop" its connection to my PC. Its consumables are relatively cheap, and I love its tall paper drawer, able to hold over half a ream of paper.

I just accidentally knocked my wifi satellite over. This made the main router in the living room crash.

No, i don’t get it either.

I guess it was mourning its friend, otherwise it must be buggy software as usual.

I'm still using the HP Color LaserJet Pro M252dw I've had for years, it just keeps going. Toner is expensive but I found someone selling the three colours as a pack, in what was clearly an office closure sale on eBay. I don't know what I would do if it broke, I still have the 10+ year old Canon inkjet I suppose that can sit forever and still work perfectly.
