I am happy to report the expensive Westmalle Dubbel was by far the best beer I drank. In fact all other beers were quite shitty as they tasted beer, the Westmalle tasted all kinds of goodness. Support Belgian monks (who mostly use the revenue to smoke pot and molest children I guess) and buy their Trappist goodness.

Had a strange apathy toward the holidays this year. Managed to salvage Christmas, but was meh on New Years. When the sore throat, headache, and crippling lack of energy hit, I decided to pretend I was old and just ignore the whole thing.

Nonetheless, happy new year, everyone! If your 2009 sucked, may 2010 be better. If your 2009 was awesome, may 2010 be better still. :)

As for me, having sent 2009 out with germs, I shall welcome 2010 with a breakfast of cookies and milk. So there.

In other random thoughts news, we have our friend's wonderful little dog with us while she's in Chicago. I love this dog very much and am thrilled to be allowed to pretend she's mine for a couple of days. However, she is reminding me why, while I like other people's dogs a lot, it's never occurred to me to want one of my own, and of why I vastly prefer cats: namely, cats don't bark, dogs don't purr. Also, cats don't follow you around demanding attention every second of the day. Or make threatening noises at everyone who enters your apartment building or dares to make a noise in it. Or require you to walk outside in sleet and cold so you can carry their poo around in a plastic bag. Dogs, meh.

I've seen this mistake quite often ("of" instead of "have" and its contraction), especially with native speakers. Is this something we foreigners just don't know about? Or some kind of auto correction that gets it wrong every now and then?
 
No, it's just poor English ;)

Just because we're native speakers doesn't mean we use proper grammar. Especially after getting the vodka to orange juice ratio slightly wrong.

Up until a few years ago someone from the really shitty neighborhood not too far from me would shoot off their AK-47 at New Years. And I know it was an AK-47 because of that distinctive "budda-budda-budda" sound.

Now it is just a few fireworks. Aurora has really changed; they kicked out or arrested all the gangs or gang members, gentrified downtown and we maybe have had 1-2 murders this year? Pretty good for Illinois's second largest city, considering that in the mid 1990's Aurora was the murder capital of the US, even higher than Washington DC.

Or maybe all the assholes left and went to Joliet, as they are apt to do.

Actualy chances are they handle those guns regulary, so they should have some idea of how to operate them safely....
Fireworks on the other end only usualy get used once/twice a year so nobody (unless your a professional) is actualy realy used to handling them....and used wrongly they to can cause some serious damage.

I'm not sure whats the most unsafe in redneck hands ;)
 
We have no fireworks, just the professional displays. They're banned here for private use.

I spent New Years at a friends place at Hillbank which overlooks a good portion of the Adelaide northern suburbs such as Salisbury, Elizabeth, etc. Believe me, there was no shortage of fireworks, professional displays or otherwise. Although it must be said, it's really no different to any other night when their drug labs, ad hoc beer distilleries, and clapped out overcharged VS Commodores blow up...
 
If anyone is wondering, no potatos do not work.

As much as it pains me to say this, that law makes sense for your country, considering Oz can have prolonged droughts.

Heh, the movie can be a bit over the top compared to the book, like when the gestapo dude and the German general are arguing about who is in charge, you half expect to see storm clouds and lightening gathering behind each one of them.
If you like the movie, try to find the book, you won't be disappointed. Also the books The Guns Of Navarone and Ice Station Zebra are excellent, too.
