It's Christmas sweater day in the office on the 14th.

Fortunately I have an old grey sweatshirt at home and a permanent red marker pen....

:D

Ooh, I know where this is going!

At my office, multiple colleagues have stashed away red sweaters in their desks to pull out once my boss starts wearing his red sweater again... Usually he wears it once a week at least, but since we started preparing, of course, he hasn't done so a single time!

Hello,

anyone in the US live near to and willing to visit a Whole Foods Market for me? Partner is going on holiday to the US and I'd like to give her a $25 gift card for Christmas - including the physical card - but WFM don't ship the gift cards to the UK.

Anyone willing to pick one up and post it on the UK for me? I'd PayPal you the cost of card, postage and some beer money on top...

Cheers,

-teeb

Draw your own gift card front and back, fold it together, stick a few bills between the two?

So my village flooded last night. I was in Oxford at the time at a vintage car event, and arrived in town as the waters were rising. I had to ford several floods just to make it to town, and then abandon the car and walk home as there was no vehicle route to the house. Since then the waters increased all evening, culminating with people being air lifted by coastguard helicopter at the end of my lane from their static caravans. They were then dropped into town at the leisure centre which acted as a temporary housing area. This morning I went for a walk and took in the damage, and the flooding is the worst I have seen, even higher than the 2009 floods. This afternoon Pooley Bridge, a 16th century bridge, important route into the Lake District and tourist attraction collapsed under the pressure. I'm currently with just one road out of the area, still, better than last night when I had none!

This is the river water nearly filling the arches Eamont Bridge, the village I live on the edges of:

Other areas of the county are even worse off. Truly an awful weekend. :(

Damn, Andeh. :( When I read the news about storm Desmond, I thought of you (as the only person I know from that area). Glad you and your cars seem to be okay, though. Best of luck for dealing with the situation to you and your fellows.

On the subject of destroyed bridges: The international railway line between Groningen (Netherlands) and Leer (East Frisia, Germany) and going further to Bremen is interrupted because a ship managed to destroy the Friesenbr?cke over the river Ems last Thursday.

More pictures and an article in German here at Neue Osnabr?cker Zeitung

And yes, that was a drawbridge, and it obviously wasn't opened when that ship arrived...

The next possibility for crossing that river for a train? A good 100 km further south. A completely new bridge will have to be built.
