Hmmm...terrorist...rapist...seems the scales are pretty evenly balanced there. I spent a night in jail because some a**hole stole my SSN and name; this person had a criminal record with everything you could imagine, short of premeditated murder.

I have been browsing camping equipment on Gander Mountain. I want to keep it as simple as possible, so I have priced out:

-small tent
-air mattress
-55 degree sleeping bag
-Coleman campstove
-obligatory Coleman lantern
-new hiking boots

So far the campstove is the most expensive, at $79.00 which I think is a ripoff. I think I will find an iron skillet somewhere else as with a pot and saucepan, preferably cheap aluminum. I have old utensils and cooking tools, there is no need to buy an aircraft aluminum fork knife and spoon set, and I have a outdoors chair and a cooler.
My goal is to somewhat divorce my home life from camping; reading instead of hauling out a laptop, turning off the cell phone. I can in all honesty stare at a fire for hours and be entertained with only my thoughts. And that is another thing: I can walk and walk and expel all the garbage in my head.

I did enjoy that on my walks in Snowdonia a couple of weeks ago. Although it was with a group it was still nice. I'm going to the Lake District on a similar trip next weekend - so hoping the weather holds out (again? Ha!) it should be great.

As a person who has spent a significant portion of his life camping (eagle scout, vigil honor member), I love to hear stories about people taking an interest in camping. Mostly the camping I do now is backpacking trips with stuff like this MSR stove.

I had no idea they were so pricey, seeing as they had been in our troop since the dawn of time. This one might be more suited to your needs, especially considering you're not feeding 20 ravenously hungry boys.

I wouldn't bother with the air mattress myself. I always made do with a good thick ground tarp for under the tent and a one inch or so thick foam bedroll for under the bag.

Check your local freecycle group. I am sure you have one most areas do now. You can usually find them in Yahoo groups or with a little google searching. I have picked up all kinds of good stuff off their free and I see camping gear all the time. Just this past week I saw posts on my group for two mess kits, a four man tent, camp stoves, rigid backpack plus some other odds and ends.

I would add a good rigid backpack to that list if you don't already have one.

Not going farther in scouts has always bothered me. I don't think I would have made it to Eagle but I wish I had gotten farther up then I did. We moved around so much that I never had a chance to settle in with one troop. By the time we did finally stop moving the first troop I joined had two boys that just hated me and bullied me all the time. The second troop was fine at first but then we got a kind of sketchy assistant scout leader. By that point all the interest had just been driven out of me.
