Random Thoughts....

I've just spent a few minutes on Facebook for the first time in months. HOW is this user-hostile POS website so relevant?
I don't get it, either. It's the worst, buggiest website to use on earth.

I've wanted to message someone for a while but they only use Facebook, I don't want to give them the impression that I use the site at all. Because I don't. Because it's shit. I'd delete my account but I want to keep the messaging/groups option open.

I keep saying, the only reason I still have an active Facebook account is so I get reminded of people's birthdays.

THE CHAOS MACHINE:
We all have a vague sense that social media is bad for our minds, for our children, and for our democracies. But the truth is that its reach and impact run far deeper than we have understood. Building on years of international reporting, Max Fisher tells the gripping and galling inside story of how Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other social networks, in their pursuit of unfettered profits, preyed on psychological frailties to create the algorithms that drive everyday users to extreme opinions and, increasingly, extreme actions. As Fisher demonstrates, the companies’ founding tenets, combined with a blinkered focus maximizing engagement, have led to a destabilized world for everyone.

Traversing the planet, Fisher tracks the ubiquity of hate speech and its spillover into violence, ills that first festered in far-off locales to their dark culmination in America during the pandemic, the 2020 election, and the Capitol Insurrection. Through it all, the social-media giants refused to intervene in any meaningful way, claiming to champion free speech when in fact what they most prized were limitless profits. The result, as Fisher shows, is a cultural shift toward a world in which people are polarized not by beliefs based on facts, but by misinformation, outrage, and fear.

His narrative is about more than the villains, however. Fisher also weaves together the stories of the heroic outsiders and Silicon Valley defectors who raised the alarm and revealed what was happening behind the closed doors of Big Tech. Both panoramic and intimate, The Chaos Machine is the definitive account of the meteoric rise and troubled legacy of the tech titans, as well as a rousing and hopeful call to arrest the havoc wreaked on our minds and our world before it’s too late.

I never was on myspace or Facebook. I wanted to avoid judgemental family members and friends of friends.

So, I'm surrounded by the breeding generation, they all have (small) kids, and they are constantly entertaining each other with stories how their little bundle of awesome is so much more advanced and better then all the others..........It's a fucking rugrat! They can't 'do' anything, to young for child labor, to old for abortion....they are just a nuisance to everyone except you, KEEP THEM TO YOURSELVES, NO I DON'T WANT TO HOLD IT, IT'S A WORM!...... the fuck are you breeding for anyway? Human life is gonna end in a few generations.......idiots.

As I write this there are kids screaming out the back as they run around on the road, for some reason the parents think that playing in the road unsupervised is a good idea. Feral is the best way to describe them. Bring on winter!

Friends in this country (I repeat, just this country) that I thought were adventurous and knew better are now having a kid, surely this must be one of the worst times to decide to bring up a child in Britain. I absolutely do not see the appeal and it's unlikely that I ever will.

„appeal“ might not be quite the right wird to describe things… I would’ve argued I was right there with you, but once i had a kid, i absolutely did see the appeal (for lack of a better word) 😜 that may just be hormones or whatever. Don’t care, I love it 🤣

One thing is not wanting kids, the other thing is getting one not working out. This topic is overdiscussed I think.

man oh man oh man I had to poop during that last meeting

I meant to work my way through the music on my computer to create a playlist for an upcoming trip. It's late and I've got as far as sigur rós and now I'm just listening to that... obviously.

You got all the way to "S"? Impressive. I barely escape the "numbers" section whenever I try. Ha!

Yes, for two reasons: since the days of the clickwheel iPod, I have preferred playlists to sorting by artist's name, so I created a lot of them and never bothered to change this habit. And since, unlike artists, iTunes sorts playlists alphabetically including "The", I've got a bunch of music grouped under T that would otherwise be elsewhere. Also, the wife was choosing with me earlier and that helped getting shit done.

I haven't driven at night for a while but I'm enjoying the 'Night Rider' playlist on Spotify all the same.

The "No 56k" tags on certain threads reminds me, is anyone here on 56k anymore?

When I'm in a zoom meeting on my wifi and accidentally open one of those pages, it certainly feels like it. :ROFLMAO:

Mom's internet kinda acts the part sometimes. :(

Either way, she's going to have to be prepared for long load times on the thread about my balls. They're just that big.
