Sorry for the Caps but Gas Prices in Southeast after that hurrican hit us (katrina) the Gas prices have SKY ROCKETED..

6:00 Am -> 2.64
6.00 Pm -> 3.00, 4.00, and even as high as 6 dollars

What the hell is wrong with this....people are freaking out because they think we will have no gas tommrow and EVERYONE is filling up...and greedy gas station owners JACK the prices up...

Sorry i had to rant about this damn hurrican's aftermath.

I know Americans are generally against market regulations, but wouldn't this be the perfect time to act ?

Well, with a number of refinaries and oil rigs down, it's not surprising.
BTW, I paid just over $3 today for premium (1st time ever).
Gas station clerk was joking that he was going to die soon, because someone was probably going to lose it and shoot him.

Be glad it's just gas prices you need to worry about as opposed to, oh I don't know.... not having a home, or, oh I don't know.... your friends and family being dead :p

We're talking about it over there, it's still under $3 here, thank god I live on an Air Force Base, but since I am in Cali, you know it's up above $3, like a couple in long beach.

It's gonna keep going up, demand is too high and there isn't enough oil to produce gas. A BP big-wig said it's gonna keep going up untill demand goes down

1970's anyone? Deja Vu

There was lines at the local Hess where I usually fill up. Normally you'd be surprised to find more then 3 cars there at one time.

Part of the problem is also, that we have reduced refining capacity. There haven't been new refineries built in the last 25 years, which is causing part of the problem. Its more of a problem with supply of gasoline, than supply of crude oil. Our prices for regular gasoline have spiked to $3.00 today, but i'm not too concerned, as I don't buy gasoline all that often. I'd like it to be cheaper, but i'll live if it doesn't get cheaper immediately.

And the other part is Government not promoting alternate fuels. And continuing to give huge tax breaks to it's fossil favorites. :)

"The only thing that comes down is rain from the skys, prices never go down".
And in Sydney, we dont even get rain :p

Prices have certainly gone up but not to the extent it has in Georgia with darktempler  Those are amazing prices!

They will get back down eventually, but not to the same level.
I still remember a while back (10 years ago or so) prices rose from $1.00 to $1.50 (or something to that effect).
I forgot the reason for the rise, but whatever it was, it was temporary in nature.
But after that temporary situation was resolved, prices dropped.... to about $1.30.

This oil market sh!t is about as real as the energy fiasco that ENRON pulled on us a few years ago (California). There is enough to stabilise the market... but wow! Every company that is involved in refining petroleum is raking in the $$$$!

It is time for alternative fuel (no, I did not say battery, fuel cell, or god power) to slay the giant energy corporations. Your car (yes the one you own) can run Ethanol today. Today! Change the type of rubber in your fuel line hose's and your good to go.

Some states even run ethanol as an addative to gasoline already!

Hard to believe I know. You know why the nerds don't make ethanol (from corn/wheat/bio waste) in their backyard and power the family volvo?

They made it illegal to manufacture! Now why would they do that?? I can make bio deisel in my backyard... why not ethanol? Hmm....

The whole thing stinks of fat cat moneymakers. :x

...

Ok. I feel better.
:)

Yeah, I agree, Oil Companies are making wayyy to much money and they have to close of ties with the government. I think Exxon Mobile made over 6 billion dollars during the first quarter of this year. Umm, excuse me, but I think thats enough money for a while, lets give some back okay?

Yeah, one of the Exxon execs was in the local news station to give a $2,000,000 check for the relief fundraiser.

Yah, there's several vehicles around here that run on 85% ethanol.
The problem has always been that it's more costly to produce than gas (and is heavily subsidized), but at these prices, perhaps it's cost-effective.

this may be a good thing... people could get rid of their big gas guzzling suvs and buy a golf as jc said.

I sure do hope so, this SUV-fad has gone too far and has too far profound effects. If you took 1/3 of the SUV's off the roads, I bet gas prices would drop. SUV's use too much gas. But unfortunately, I don't think us Americans are done loving our SUV's. I hate SUV's.

You got it... mostly.

As of 1st q 2004 fuel quality ethanol can be produced for less than a 20% increase of consumer costs. This is drastically less than the current pump costs and were figured using small, independant conversion of brewry hardware... not fuel company money.

Imagine if shell /exxon/bp got in the act and converted their industry?

Subisdies are a myth due to the food industry using many of the same basic material. The ethanol industry would not need any type of subsidy. Its creating fuel from waste material.

How wonderful the world could be. . . .

Oil prices dictate gas prices.

Right now since the events though? Yes it's the lack of gasoline supply, but later it will go up because of the oil supply.. one of the BP section Presidents said that the amount of oil production is not matching the demand that can be used to create gasoline, hence the price per barrel dictating prices at the pump to go up, to reduce the demand.

But god, I wish I lived back in Rodenbach, Germany where I could ride my bike or scooter everywhere.

Yep, when a barrel of oil rises in price, petrol/gas prices will rise within a day or two...

Because the demand for oil is outweighing the supply, the price rises to help slow down the demand for it.

Simple economics and there's nothing we can do about it... Except stop driving SUV's
