"RAW" ? what is it?

what is raw mode?or raw pictures? i hear it a lot but have no idea as to what it is/means.
In few words, it's what it's name suggests, raw data from the sensor. In 3 components form (RGB). No compression losses, and gives you the freedom to adjust stuff like white balance afterwards, because of more color information. But also quite large filesize and needs more work to use it.
