REALLY GONNA GET A NEW HD on Wednesday. NEED ADVICE!

aite i got money in my bank

i wanna get a new hd as mine are full. 100GB in total.

but! i am a scabby bugger so i want to know whats the best one for money. i wanna get a 120gb one and wonder if it is worth getting that extra mb so the stuff comes up faster or to get S-ATA or ATA.

but i donno if my mother board supprots it. if it helps its a ASUS P4S333

I'm sorry to tell you, but your mobo doesn't support sata. So that's no option anymore. If you need to buy a new hd, I would suggest to go for 160-200-250GB. They're the best value for storage nowadays. Don't get fooled with the amount of cache it has. You won't need it unless you transfer alot between hd's.
And another thing, I wouldn't post how much money you have. I wouldn't even say it to your best friends.

Nah, go to the store with a calculator, then work out the cost per gigabyte. In Holland the sweet spot is the 200gb drive, best $ per gig.
But its kinda different per region. Like stated earlier it is going to be in the 160-250 gig region.


As for brand, the 5 year warrenty seagate offers is no match for the other brands.

I've always asked myself one thing about external caddys. I've thought about buying one a few months ago, when they finally became affordable. As far as I understood it, you can get them as USB 2.0 and Firewire.
So my question is the following one. Where are the differences between them. Is it just a speed difference or are there other reasons in favor of firewire ? Like the compatibility with macs. That would be important to me because a friend of mine has one.
 
Firewire is faster, but not every pc has it, most macs do.
Usb2 is pretty close though, and most of the time the usb2 caddies are cheaper.
Another point is that there are loads of other devices which are more likely to support usb.
 
Technically, from what I understand, USB2 is a much messier and crappier standard than FireWire.
I'm sure that's why the industry made it more popular than firewire. :bangin:

Isn't USB from Microsoft and Firewire by Apple ? That would explain the differences. ;)
 
Overall usb controllers, that you get on mobos and other devices are way cheaper than the firewire counter parts. Thats why its more popular.

And I'm not sure, but I think you might also have to pay a licence fee if you want to make a firewire device.
 
I have more Firewire ports than I know what to do with. :?
 
i have a simple external box and a normal hdd in it, usb2, works perfectly fine. dunno about firewire, but with usb boxes u have to be careful with max capacity, my box e.g. can handle 120gb hdd max, so u wouldnt be able to put e.g. a 200gb hdd
 
same here.... so I end up just using a firewire port for my iPod only... I have like 4 on my comp cuz when it first came out... it was the quickest and I bought a PCI card so I can plug in my external HD and everything... little did I know that the USB 2.0 was going to be released round the corner :lol:
 
but if I have 4spare ports for Firewire... I might as well use it... its just like 0.01sec per song quicker by USB :mrgreen:
 
There are a few specs to be careful about too, USB 2 Full Speed and High Speed, 480mbps
Firewire 400mbps, and Firewire 2 (800mbps). You can never use these speeds :)

It was cheaper getting the USB 2.0 model, and its more common to have usb ports than firewire. it really doesnt matter.

Some caddys can handle the 300gb hd also, always better to read before buying, also check that it comes with a small fan to keep the HD cool. I got a generic brand (ePRO). its great, works fine for me and even has a fan.
 
im a hitachi fan, so i recommend a hitachi harddisk. Seagate etc are good as well, but maxtor is generally hotter and noisier...
 
I haven't had good experience with my Hitachi hard-disk... my next hd would be a WD as its the only one I haven't tried :lol:
