found some more stuff

this appears to be the real story

"If you do a search on TMF, you should find a few threads about it.

To cut a long story short - it was found out that the car is nothing more than a log book rebuild, in other words not ONE part of that car has even been in the general area of Paddy Hopkirk, let alone used by him. The donor shell is from an 850 of the right age........just not with the original VIN tag. sad.gif There have been a few discussions about the legalities of using a second hand shell - some quite heated on some forums. Some belive it not to be too bad to use a donor shell as it was fairly common for the 60's race / rally teams to reshell a damaged vehicle numerous times with various age shells of other cars. Others point out that it's still illegal under DVLA rules.

BUT it must be said that it IS rebuilt to original rally spec, using genuine period parts and has been completed to a VERY high standard. There are pics of the rebuild and final outcome, floating about on some of the forums (think I saw some on Minifinity, under "general mini chat", a while back).

The car was *supposed* to finally make an apearance on top gear during the previous series (after many delays), but may make it onto the new series (but I doubt it - the BBC were not too happy about the car actually being a logbook rebuild, which they were unaware of at the time. This was also the reason behind the long delay in starting the rebuild).

Hope that clears things up for you."

Ok, what happened to the restoration Ripoff Mini, or did I miss it somewhere???

Could they really not afford to do it, or did they give it to jeremy to do like the roller

They truly ripped us off !

^All the cool guys now just says "If you want to watch a car-show, watch Fifth Gear"... :p:rolleyes:

Irony at its best ladies and gents.

What they should of done is used this rallying mini in the desiel race.

Yeah, seeing as how it's probably gas, underpowered, etc. etc.

I have always hated restoration rip off and it continues to make me angry. Of all the cars to pick, they picked the most common, the cheapest, the least interesting car. Yeah some guy raced it, big shit.

The probe was one of 3 cars, that would have been amazing. Keith moons car was just fantastic, such history, such badassness, imagine driving up to a party in that? It would be legendary! What about James Dean's lotus! the car that could have changed history!

But no, they picked some shitty commoner car that they didn't even restore, just built a replica of 4 years after the fact. CHRIST!

</end rant> sorry folks, this just boils my potatoes

Can't believe they picked the mini. Haven't you brits had enough of the damn things yet? That's like asking for the chicken again in a restaurant that is offering venison.

My vote would have been on the Probe, for sure.
