No 56k: Ringmeet 2011 - What could possibly go wrong? (Dump all your pics & videos here)

Seven as tow car? That's properly awesome. Let's see if pictures of that surface on the failtubes or somewhere. :D

Also, my father drives a Sc?nic. Not only the turn signal sounds awful, using the stalk actually physically feels cheap.

Yeah I'm impressed that the 7 could tow that white ephelant. I'll do my best to have the Series 3 with me next year if I still own it, you won't need to worry about towing at all. Especially if I can find a Cummins diesel for cheap monies.

^ Same with the Kangoo. Lets try and get other FG Ukanians to come along, because it was great fun!

The current gen Renaultsport Megane Trophy (AFAIK) has lapped the ring 8min 8 seconds already, so it should be a blast. Almost 20s quicker than Focus RS... Of course being quick and being fun are totally different things, for sheer lift-off oversteeriness 106/205/306 GTis or Clio Williams should be pretty fun, especially the 205.

And good luck to DaBoom and MXM! I really want to see a video of that towing, epic.

I've collected some pics of us doing laps. I didn't check if and what was already posted, so you'll probably find reposts. I only remember D-Fence talking about racetracker, so i mostly ignored pics on there.

As you said, Lastsoul, fast 'Ring times and being fun are definitely not the same thing. The TR7 we used in LeMons was slow, but it was a blast. It had a great combination of feel, handling behavior (perfect handling balance) and weird/quirkiness.

The 'Ring was a different experience, but with what I've done in the past, it was essentially a different combination of mostly-familiar factors. The mix of car types and abilities is familiar to me from HPDEs - a mostly stock (older) Civic and old Miata will share track space with a 911 Turbo S, a Ferrari 360 Challenge, and a Stock car (as in those NASCAR things, but set up for road courses instead of ovals - 500+ hp and 2800 pounds). The "pass anywhere" and "signals optional" is familiar from LeMons and some Instructor run groups (some instructor groups require a passing signal, in some it's optional). What was unusual was the "pass only on the left" - on track the rule is generally "slower car stays on the line, faster car goes off line". Still, as long as everyone knows and follows the standard, it works. :) The mix of driver skill was very familiar from both LeMons and Chump.

The track itself was mostly unfamiliar to me. I had picked up a few bits from Forza 2 (I haven't played any driving games in a while, so it's Forza 2 for me) and from the little bit of watching we did. Still, the cues to tell me where the track went were strong. I often had cars to follow - though most of these cars did not give me a good idea of the proper line (sorry, but I don't trust people on tourist days), they did tell me the general direction of the track. And even without them, there were things like the tree line and the worn pavement from other cars that gave me clues. Not knowing a track like that definitely reenforces the "look ahead" aspect of track driving. It was fun, but I think I'd like either an HPDE like environment or a flat out race there.

As to the "meet" part of RingMeet, OMG AWESOME. I had a blast. You guys were really welcoming, especially to the idiot Americans who barely managed to bring sleeping bags. Shad, huge thanks for letting us turn your tend into the ancillary Texas embassy. It held out that scary water-from-the-sky stuff quite well. I look forward to the next time we can make it over, and running a RWD car on the 'Ring. :D

Oh you bloody Americans, no camping gear but a flag - setting priorities right it seems :p

No problem. :) Now I can claim that I lived in little Texas for a weekend.
I have to thank everyone who helped put the thing up and tear it down later as well, thank you guys! Getting it dry back home was a bit tricky, but my brother and me somehow got that done as well.

And of course thanks to Nugget for giving me a ride, that was quite an experience. :D

Of course. A flag and enough intimidation and camping gear will just APPEAR!

That's how it's supposed to work, right? :D

You mean you liberated the person who, in gratitude, let you share his ressources (camping gear)?

Little update on the obvious Ringmeetcurse I seem to have this year:

Today 6:55am I got an e-mail from Sixt - my bill as pdf, just for my documents. So far, so good. Opening the pdf I find out that Sixt charged me a 4th day because i returned the car on Monday, 7:27am instead of Sunday evening (according to the thursday evening pickup). Sixt wants another 67? for the 4th day that isn't even a proper day and is asking 35% more than what i paid for the other 3 days.

Today 7:05am I wrote a friendly but demanding email to sixt (billig-support only via fax or email, no phone), stating that i dropped the car off via key2mailbox on sunday evening, as booked. Also I stated that I can prove the return in time with several facts. First being a guy that dropped off his rental at the very same time when I did, second being my neighbour which i met sunday evening at home - with my car, and third being about 35 witnesses at work that can confirm that I was at work since 7am and with my car. And I, of course, demanded the immediate refund of said 67? to my Mastercard (which they decided to charge for the unjustified claim..).

Today 12:38pm I got another email from Sixt, stating a big sorry, the fact that they immediately changed the time of return and that they will refund the 67? to my CC. Also I will get a new bill within the next days.

Overall: A few hours of *ARFEFRHZNZR(OTZ$%R))$//%?`?"$?* and a surprisingly fast relief.

On a sidenote: No news on the thing that never happened.

On this trip I have GPS Logger running on the DHD every time it's plugged into the car. I also had it on when doing ring laps, and now I managed to extract data. I know, I said a couple of times that I consciously didn't time my laps because I don't want to push my daily car, but curiosity took over me, seeing as data is there anyway :p

First lap on Saturday with DanRoM (lots of traffic + broken bushing and general lack of confidence in the car at high speed):
12min 29sec

Second lap on Sunday with Adrian (very little traffic and starting to enjoy the handling):
11min dead

Third lap with Adrian's friend (again, no traffic and confidence gained from 2nd lap):
10min 13sec

Of course. A flag and enough intimidation and camping gear will just APPEAR!

Yeah... and next time also collect enough bonus points at REWE markets, so you can get the towels, too :p

I have only made good experiences with Sixt to far. But then again, they know me by now and I guess I could get away with stuff others wouldn't.
