Rivian R1S SUV, R1T

Got invited to a Private event last week to preview the upcoming Rivian 3 row SUV at their Venice showroom, open to all customers who put down a pre order deposit for a vehicle. I'm really impressed with what I saw. They let us poke around and check out everything in their two demo vehicles. Fit finish and interior quality is definitely a step above anything Tesla has produced (but it better for the prices they are asking). An incredibly handsome vehicle IMHO and makes me excited for when my number comes up in the factory build queue a few years from now.

Hopefully by then their software will have gone thru several iterations of refinement from all the R1T truck owners on the road as well as the early releases of the R1S SUV 👍🏼

Lights: kinda lame. The owl, though? That's cool as hell, and would want that all year. :)

Some reports of a daily 'vampire' battery drain of about 2.5%!

Sharing some photos from yesterday's R1S test drive. AFAIK all R1S customers who have a pending order deposit were offered the chance to schedule an early preview test drive.

Got set up in a quad motor Adventure package R1S, got a pretty full walk through of the SUV as if we were taking delivery of a new car and then set off for a local test drive, combined local and freeway driving.

First driving impressions: overall it's as nice as I've expected, very smooth, luxurious, drives and handles much better than a vehicle this size should. The air suspension has two modes (normal and sport) and normal is perfect for regular driving. Sport suspension is definitely stiffer and makes the ride more bouncy, noticeable in the front seats but gets worse for backseat passengers, so recommended not to engage sport with rear passengers unless you want to make them car sick.

Interior sound insulation is impressive, especially since it came equipped with 20" Scorpion A/T tires and I couldn't even hear them inside the cabin, compared to my Telluride where I can still hear tire noise from my Falken A/T tires.

Got to try launch control once on an open straight line stretch. Ridiculously fast for a vehicle that size and maybe slightly faster than my Taycan 4S in a straigh line launch.

Overall inside and out it feels worth like the $80-90k price tag.

Yeah. This is neither shocking not new. It's the same problem every ute that has tried to carve a space in the market has faced.

Big announcement (for N America at least) following footsteps of Ford and GM in the US, Rivian has announced adopting Tesla NACS charging standard starting in 2025

Here goes 😜

Also: on my way home from work I saw two Rivian Amazon vans on a flatbed on the highway. One of the better looking delivery vans for sure… did not know they had arrived over here yet!
