Figured we need one of these. Probably won’t be a popular thread for euros, but at least here in the rust belt, rusty cars and lack of rust protection and repair mean cars rot away.

like this!

The way those arches rot out is fascinating to me. Reminds me of this old video (headphone warning - loud):

The sills/rockers too, wow they just don't seem to use any rust protection at all. I find those videos really satisfying though, it's like picking scabs.

If you tried to take one of these in for inspection in Finland, they'd probably send the car to the crusher and lock you up.

This one scared me a bit, because I saw when he went over bumps the whole truck wiggle like a worm. The front end moved separately from the cab, which moved separately from the bed.

this one may not be too bad, however seeing just the bottom is being as crusty as it is, suggest there’s probably more problems lurking beneath.

A bit of a twofer there with the Econoline's bumper.
Yeah, I didn't include it because I didn't consider it *that* bad. It had the usual lower side door rust and front bumper, but visually, it wasn't that bad otherwise.

Spotted this beautiful specimen yesterday while visiting the grocery store in Marquette.

Note that the rear door has been bondoed/plated (not sure really) in and there's a patch panel made of an old sign to seal the under body (or plate the frame, again, who knows).

I know it's (most likely) because you don't have any sort of periodic vehicle inspection, but holy shit, how are these cars and trucks still on the road?

Lack of usable public transit everywhere, going places designed to get there by car, urban sprawl and your place of work or living has no public transport. Because the US focused on cars where most nations after WW2 didn’t, this is where the requirement to have a car comes into play. Plus the used car market has always been fucked in terms of getting a decent car for less than $2,500 and no annual inspection, this is the result.
