Sandy Bridge (Builds, Discussion and Random Shit)

I think Turbo Boost only allows one core to reach 3.8Ghz if I'm not mistaken. If two cores are needed then they each can peak at 3.7Ghz, 3 cores each at 3.6Ghz and all four at 3.5Ghz.


After a bit of investigating via Google I have found a few posts from owners of both Gigabyte and ASUS Z68 mobo owners who have this exact problem. It seems like both Gigabyte and ASUS are enabling this "feature" in order to give their boards a better score with reviewers.:rolleyes:

Just manually OC that bitch. I've been running a i5-2500k for months now at 4.2Ghz on only a Hyper 212+ with no problemo.

Can anyone confirm if it is normal for the clock ratio to jump to 38x when using 1600Mhz or faster memory? My Z68 board started doing this after a BIOS update.

Well, Sandy Bridge is capped at 1333mhz on the RAM. Even if you have 2ghz RAM the chip underclocks it to 1333mhz.
- So this would be very weird :)

So coming back from "The "New Toys" Thread"
I finished off the build with:
a Corsair AX750 psu
Corsair 8GB (2 x 4GB) PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 RAM - 9-9-9-24 - Vengeance Series
and a Samsung SH-B123A Blu-ray

But it's not gone so well. Turning on the computer, the monitor does not leave stand by and also it double POSTs which I think is ok and can be fixed easily. Got to do some troubleshooting.
 
A few things to things to try.

1) Try pressing the 'mem-ok' switch in the top right hand corner of the motherboard while the system is booting.

2) If that doesn't work try removing one stick of ram and testing each of them.

3) I'm not sure how it works on the Z68-Pro, but if it's like the P8-P67-Pro you need to press the 'Clear CMOS' button. They may also be jumpers, move the pins from 1-2 to 2-3 for 10 seconds when the board is powered off and then move them back.

4) If that fails checks the connections on your GPU

5)Your in the boat I was for three motherboards, you'll have to RMA that thing.
 
Get the 6950 if you have to, it's the best of the two cards (if you get the 2GB version.) If you can, try to wait. Brand new 28nm cards are just around the corner.
 
When are they expected? Will the new cards be in all price ranges or will they just be high end cards?

EDIT: It looks like Q3/Q4 of this year. Sounds like waiting might be smart.

The lower end cards will be more like Q1 2012 as they always release the high end cards first. AMD will be coming out first, expect nVidia to be later to the game.
 
Yeah just go with the the 2GB version of the XFX 6950 card, it's what I threw in my build and it has made me quite happy.
 
After thinking over computer builds I pondered here, I have now bought myself a sandy bridge build.

1TB Seagate
Corsair CX600 600W PSU

Nickled and dimed Microcenter. A combo of their deals and price matching newegg, I got this build cheaper than I could get one on newegg with a 2400 and 4gb ram. Setting it up now.

This is an upgrade from my 6 year old machine still running an Athlon X2 4800+. Looking for a big difference here.

EDIT: First posting from the new computer. Yet to give it a good run around.

So when are we going to see some hex core sandy bridge processors that'll out-brute force the outgoing 1366? Cause that's when I'll upgrade.

Sandy Bridge-E will be octo-core with quad channel RAM, and a decently overclocked air-cooled 2600k will out-brute force an overclocked i7-990X.

I'm personally more tempted with the forthcoming 22nm Ivy Bridge parts which will be out around the same time. And I think I *may* just be able to hold out till then.
