I reckon it would be a lot funnier, if they were to use a 'handycam' style program, with James, Hamster and Jezza being the producers and script-writers, it would be hilarious. Let them off the leash like the Comic Relief special.

i want clarkson to compare ZR1 and ACR

I can see a benefit to the cost-cutting. The last series was IMHO awful, with less and less 'car' content and way too much silliness. I have every episode stored on my PVR and have re-watched none of them, and even turn the Dave showings off. I have never done this with ANY previous season. Even the Vietnam special was unenjoyable as Top Gear, but quite good as a travel diorama/documentary/comedy. I long for them to do group tests like the ones on the Isle of Man of realistic, affordable (mostly), everyday cars on real roads with a Stig lap as a finale. If they really want to represent the credit crunch, then resign the million pound hypercars to minor car porn articles in favor of some stuff we all can buy, drive and enjoy. It doesn't have to be like 5th Gear, it wouldn't be as the presenters are so much better, but the show could get back to its roots a little. Audience figures might drop a little as kids and girls drift away, but unless they change something, soon, then car nuts like me are the ones drifting off. A lot more thought needs to be put into the guests for SIARPC too, if indeed the feature is to remain. They never used to use it for 'plugging' the latest tatt book, film or whatever, and it needs to get back to petrolhead celebs rising to the challenge with passion, and giving us a good laugh when they fail miserably. Keep the news, keep the Cool Wall, keep the pretty girls in the front row, it's not all bad. Let's see more IoM, Pendine Sands, Buttertubs Pass, Scotland. Let's see Scoobs vs Evo's vs Focus RS's, Atom vs Radical vs KTM vs R500, S5 3.0 TDi Quattro vs 335D vs some Merc or another, Fiestsa vs FIat 500's vs Suzuki Swifts vs Mini's vs whatever the Hell else, on road, and track, with insight and wit. No lorries, no oriental scooters, no post war communist crap, no powerboats !!!!! Look over THIS and notice how the whole of S12 featured just 17 cars. S01E08 featured 9 on its own ! I'd rather watch that eight times than watch S12 again.

Right, flame me !

You'll never see them at Pendine Sands again. Cars have been banned from there since the summer of 2004. :(

I thought S12 was one of the best, personally. A vast improvement over a (IMO) lacklustre S11.

Know what I want to see in the newseason?

A piano occassionally falling when they are out on the track.

I think that would be an excellent running joke.

I couldn't agree more, it really went in a good direction

Wow! Flame? You can't fight fire with fire.... You are a very angry person!

I have every right to be, I'm 40 this year

So am I. It's not so much anger for me as the eternal crushing disappointment as it finally dawns on you that in spite of your hopes and dreams you've turned out to be nothing more than Mr Average! I can really see where mid-life crises come from.

Please ignore any perceived glumness. I didn't exactly feel a thrill a minute when I woke up, and then the news told me this is the day I am supposed to be particularly depressed so I sank even further into a blue funk.

There are a few misconceptions here:
-JC already is co-producer, apart from that, a producer does first of all come up with the money to finance the program, and second, as a line producer, deals with all the organisational hazzle that comes with a shoot, like getting permits and so on... you don't want the boys to do this kind of work.

-Handycam is the exact opposite of the glossy "Bruckheimer" look TG is famous for, gives most people motion sickness and is not HD, thus, it's a three-time no-go.

-As Jezza is the head scriptwriter anyways and some in-studio bits are improvises anyways, that would not be too much of a change, either.

Hah you're not alone there. I can pretty much quote all of them. There are just no other shows that are so watchable

Lol, I'll admit I'm a big fan too. Been to watch it live a few times, so interesting how it all works!

I turned 40 last year. I am always angry.

Series 12 was one of the best. If you want car content then watch Fifth Gear, they review cars. The Vietnam episode was epic, it was one of the best, I also enjoy the 'documentary' where they were not allowed to be entertaining when they went to the Bonneville Salt Flats and Hamster bought the Dodge. I personally hate it when there is too much car content and not enough silliness.

Well... maybe you should rather watch Marx Brothers movies then. Top Gear is a car show that is also fun, not some kind of slapstick program with cars thrown in now and then. The difference between Top Gear and Fifth Gear is that Fifth Gear take themselves more seriously, not in the subject matter, cars.

I do love the silliness, but I do enjoy the reviews of the cars, even if many of them are irrelevant to me do to either price (supercars/exotics) or they are not imported into the United States.

My favorite bits are what I call the "grand challenges" - the train/car race to Monte Carlo. The Veyron/Plane race. And the "perfect road" search. I am not so enamored of the "fastest faith" or "man vs. car" challenges as much, so I would not miss them being cut out to reduce costs and allow more vehicle reviews.

I admit I loved the Vietnam Special - it was my favorite of the various full-episode specials they have done (replacing "African Challenge").

I'm looking forward to the new season of Top Gear. I hope it will be longer than the last couple; the half-dozen episode seasons are getting kinda annoying. That said, I hope they do another 'epic' challenge: specifically an off-road one.

I was thinking along those lines as well. They should just drop random shit on Top Gear Stunt Man. He could be like the modern day Muppet Newsreader...

True, but they have really been banging out the shorter seasons. I like the 2 seasons-a-year deal!

Remind me, what did Top Gear used to be about? Oh yes, cars! Top Gear was made before 2008 also, you know. If you don't like cars, don't watch it.

When you say "if you want to see cars, watch Fifth Gear", I counter with: if you want to see some random, overscripted, not-funny sit-com, go ahead and watch some of the other 258 shows that already airs in Britain. With the current way Top Gear changes, they soon might need to change to name to Top Sit-Com or something.

Also, I just don't watch Top Gear just because of the cars. If they release or make something outside Top Gear (wine/beer series, documentaries, game shows, etc), I'm usually one of the first to download it.
