What does "shooting brakes" mean? Is it another way of saying "station wagon" or something?

Anyways, my favourite wagon conversion:
stationwagen_2.jpg

We discussed it a while ago, but I'm still obesessed with this car.

BMW only made 4-door versions of their E30 estates

Ya, Bone explained the BMW 3-door wagon in this thread: http://gear.viper007bond.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1680&start=20.

bone said:
and that's not a production BMW!!

in 1973 BMW made a touring (2-door wagon), but they hardly sold any car, and stopped making them when the E30 came. but some dutch guys (Henk and Henny Luchjensbroers -what a name-) taught sth else, and beginning in 82, they converted BMW 5 and 3 series into toerings. not a lot of cars were made, but there did go 5 to england (with right hand drive). and the bootlid comes from a golf I

Agh. That's one big post of horrible looking cars...

If I had to pick one out of those it propably would be the Audi Quattro. Apart from the bootlid it's rather OK.

That Gardner Douglas thingie looks pretty... shall we say interesting, too. I have seen worse designs...

when you say I drive a wagon... it doesn't make you feel like your 50... unlike Estate... makes you sound like you are driving a funeral car

so shooting brake is station wagon?

some of these cars are such a waste. so ugly.....

why would u want a estate aston?!!?1 what a fucking waste

Nearly all of these are pretty ugly, and look more like a design afterthought rather then designed from the ground-up. But I don't really consider the Saab 99 to be a "shooting brake" (more like a "fastback"-type design), and that'll be the one I'd choose from all these, or either the '55 Chevy Nomad.
