Should I? :D

I caught myself staring at a $1000 Mazda MPV as I was driving past a car dealership after watching Top Gear's van race. I'd absolutely love to have a 928 - but I think I'd opt for a proper one rather than a 1500 pound one. :p

The one James had was pretty "good", and 1500 is not much, but where do you wanna buy a 944/928 without rust?

On the west coast of Canada there are tonnes of 944s and 928s with absolutely no rust. If cars are kept well on the west coast, they don't rust at all.

they are an elephant to own and maintain .... if you are up for the maintainance cost then they are good otherwise you be wise to stay away.

944 don't rust easily, it's fully galvanized, so they don't rust unless damaged.
And I don't think you should compare 928 with 944. They are totally different. 944 are much lighter, and have only half of 928's engine. 928 is GT car, perfect for autobahns :) 944 is perfectly balanced and is really fun to drive, although not very fast. It's not a drag-racer, so if you like to show off and race others at traffic lights, it's definitely not a wise choise. And engined can not be really tuned much. If you into that, look for turbo, it can achieve pretty impressive performance with not much modifications. But suspension is great, even better if it has thicker sway bars than base model. I'll be installing ones from turbo next summer, small investment - big difference :)

If you deside to buy it, check clutch and tranny, these are ridicilously expensive parts (I feld the pain of paying for replacing clutch myself). Otherwise it's not that expensive to maintain. Even better if you can perform small tasks yourself. So you don't have to go to Porsche dealer every time you need to change oil or brakes. And mine is consuming like 10.5liters / 100km. I think it's affordable...

P.S. And yeah, timing belt should be definitely changed with proper tension-tool. It's the first and most important thing after buying a 944.

Hm. 8000$? Sounds like a lot. That's what it costs here in Finland, and car prices here are pretty high because of taxes (not like Norway, but still).

Luckily second-hand prices isn't that extreme
(the again only meaning that the money lost when buying a new car and selling it, is huge)

One of these 944's cost about the same here (8000$), then you'll get a nice one.
This one seems allright, but you'll have to give it a little work to make it special..

to get such old cars... you guys have to pay cash as it is almost impossible to get loans on those cars anymore right?
Well... thats how it works here because I remember someone offering to buy my Uncle's 1982 Alfa Romeo GTV6 for about 12000USD cash

^ Ya, those Trader.ca links don't work.

They're not really great cars, and it'll be expensive for you if something goes wrong in one, i assume parts are expensive and hard to find, unless you got a spare care for parts. Plus that 944 is expensive, you can find much cheaper if you go around private deals, you might get lucky and find a good clean one from an elderly for cheap.
Guys if you wanna link for autotrader, you gotta get the long ass link, not all links work from trader.ca
the Rx7 was the porsche rival back in the 80's and I remember reading somewhere that the rx7 out-performed the porsche and was cheaper than it, go for the rx7777777777777777777777777 check the hotness in the sig

Get a Caterham Super Seven :p

Ok, back up your talking please. If everyone get shouting out about the cars they like it's not gonna get anywhere.
There are PLENTY of used 944 parts, as well as new ones. And not very expensive. Expecially in USA (and it's no problem ordering them if you're Canada I guess). Car is not that expensive, engines are durable (unlike rx-7), and 150kkm is nothing for them. Mine has 250kkm and it's not even consuming oil. So your comments has no base. I'm not gonna argue about looks, that's highly subjective.
And if budget allows, definitely check out a turbo :) It's like a different car, it's much much faster. Of course good one will cost twise as much :|
