Should this be the last season of top gear?

ok, first and foremost, i know im going to get a lot of abuse, possibly some negative rep and maybe a bad name. but that's all part of it. i want a discussion going from this.

In my opinion, it'd probably be wise, smart, or whatever word you want to use, that top gear makes season 12 its last

Dont get me wrong, i love the show. ive grown up watching classic top gear with tiff saying that everything's "the best...in the world", and clarkson shouting with an afro and aviators. I see the show as a role model in some ways, as its given me strong aspirations of what i want to become later on in life. As sad as it is to say, if or when top gear does announce that it will be their last season, i know that i would cry.

but these days, top gear just doesn't seem to be top gear anymore. its still a great show and i love watching it, but its in the back of my mind now that im watching it as a comedy show, and not as a reputable car program.

i'm fearful that if they go on for a few more seasons, that's all they'll become. A run of the mill comedy. And, as is the way with a lot of comedies, they have their time in the spotlight and then they go too far.
The great shows though, such as Seinfeld and Friends, even against fans and critics opinions, stand up at the prime of their careers and say 'thanks, it was great, but we think its now enough'

We're already seeing signs of the show becoming a comedy. In todays episode for instance, they had a dog in a lambo, james may shitting himself because his lorry broke and a piano held up by porn mags. and admittedly, i laughed like hell.

But in my opinion, this season should be their last. Any more and my respect for clarkson, hammond, may, and perhaps even willman, would probably go down.
If however, at the end of this season they do say top gear no more, i know they'd be going out on a strong note, we'd all remember the run for many years to come, and although we'd be sad, we'd still smile when we look back on it

please, be fair on me because i know i'm on a very unstable topic, but discuss. Should it be their last. and i encourage every opinion because this is finalgear, and that's what we're all about

While it's tempting to go hell for leather in reply I'm going to exercise restraint and simply sit back and watch the reaction to this. It ain't gonna be pretty that's for sure. :wicked:

believe me im already bracing for it
heck, i dont even want it to happen myself
i just think it could be the best option

no, not really. If anything the last episode convinced me that there's still a whole lot of stuff they can do, and it'll still be funny. They've never done a 4x4 challenge or buses (although they will do in this series, apparently)

Maybe it's just time for you to stop watching?

Actually, I think you do make a valid point. I'd just prefer a different solution. This season shouldn't be their last, the production crew (including the three blokes) should just be careful where they're going with the show.

When a show grows so popular, it's almost inevitable to change things here and there. But they need to stay focused, or they may silently lose their base (= all time viewers). Then, the moment the general public loses interest, the whole thing collapses.

Do your thing guys, but keep your hands on the wheel! ;)

Remind me not to come back as your pet dog - you'd be having me put down for bad breath. As for TG there's plenty of life in the old dog yet, and as Wilman said in his pre-series blog prior to season 11 they'll quit when it stops working. If you don't like it any more I am sure there are sources for "Strictly" torrents on the interweb - maybe you should give those a go?

Ideally all programs would quit whilst at the top of their game. But you gotta pick it right. I really believe they are yet to see the top in terms of viewers and revenue from the Top Gear brand. I would've thought a couple seasons ago they were at their top but they changed the program and its direction slightly and its gone skyward since then.

I won't say I like Top Gear as much as I use too. Its still excellent. But they are appealing to the masses, and succeeding I think. Top Gear is becoming a household name. I was surprised with how much Top Gear branded products there are in the shops when I was shopping for Fathers Day this year. And they recently won that award also....

Picking the right time to stop will be crucial for the program. I just don't think that time is now. Its hard to say. If they stay the way they are - maybe 2-years? If they change, innovate and/or get back to their core of testing cars - possibly longer. I really don't know.

oh no. i would never do that. as ive said, i still love the show, and being a top gear purist i'll be watching this right to the end, even if they do 20 odd seasons, and regardless of how good it is.

heck its getting hard for me now to actually word my reasoning for saying this. im killing myself saying no no no id hate it if they ended, which i would, but at the same time i want the guys to hold their dignity and keep their well earned respect

Well part of the reason that they are scaling back to only 14 episodes a year is so that the show doesn't become stale and the quality remains high.

very well worded. i agree entirely
my only concern is them taking the gamble and possibly getting it wrong

As long as there'll be new cars developped and they can still be had fun in, TG will exist to make us laugh. End of story.

so far so good
i havent got a pitchfork up my ass and im not yet burnt
and im quite happy with what im seeing
i have no problem with the people completely denying the fact, and to a certain extent, i agree with you

but im glad to see some people are agreeing that the show might need to be toned down to ensure its longevity
or at least agreeing with the concept of ending at the top.

lets keep these opinions coming

No, but I get what you're saying. I can assure you though that they're well aware the concerns you have and are making a conscious effort where the show goes and that it doesn't get too far from it's roots.

How can you assure him(us)?

I believe you Viper, but I am just curious about your reasoning/sources.
