I just stumbled over this and felt the urge to share it with my fellow photographing fanatics! I think this reads really great, especially as its a crop-lens which could make this a really great everyday-lens.

Important details:
- 18-35mm
- f1.8
- internal zoom
- not-moving front
- FTM
- HSM

I am fairly excited for this one and hope the price will be at least somewhat reasonable! What are your thoughts on this?

The DP-Review Newspost with the official text: (The sigma-site seems to be offline/timing out for me)
http://www.dpreview.com/news/2013/0...worlds-first-F1-8-constant-aperture-zoom-lens

Fullquote of DPR for the sake of it:
Sigma has announced the 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM Art lens for APS-C DSLRs - the world's first constant F1.8 zoom. The lens covers a 27-52.5mm equivalent range, though the company has not yet announced which mounts it will be offered in. There is also no announcement of a recommended price. The lens will offer the light-gathering and depth-of-field equivalent of a constant F2.7 on full-frame, which may under-cut the need for some photographers to change formats.

We're impressed to see a manufacturer creating a high-end lens for APS-C at a time when the big DSLR manufacturers are trying to tempt users across to full-frame bodies and the additional lenses that such a move can require. At a time when APS-C cameras (and their sensors) are so good, and continue to make up such a large proportion of DSLR sales, it makes sense to offer high-quality lenses to support them.

Sigma Corporation announces world's first F1.8 constant aperture zoom lens

New 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM features Global Vision Art lens design

RONKONKOMA, NY, Apr. 18, 2013 ? Sigma Corporation of America (www.sigmaphoto.com), a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider for some of the world's most impressive lines of lenses, cameras and flashes, today announced the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM Art lens, the market?s first zoom lens to achieve a maximum aperture F1.8 throughout the entire zoom range.

This revolutionary, wide aperture, standard zoom lens is created for DSLR cameras with APS-C size sensors, which translates to a focal range of 27-52.5mm on a 35mm camera. With a minimum focusing distance of 11 inches, and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.3, the 18-35mm is ideal for landscapes, portraits, still-life, studio, close-up and casual photography.

"Exceptionally fast apertures were previously unavailable in zoom lenses, so photographers turned to several prime lenses in a session to get bright images at various focal lengths. We're incredibly excited to be the first manufacturer to bring the F1.8 standard zoom to the market and to provide photographers with a new level of creativity and convenience, with the outstanding image quality at the core of the new Sigma Global Vision," said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America.

Amir-Hamzeh added that because developing a large aperture wide angle zoom lens can prove to be technologically and optically challenging, often resulting in various distortions, aberrations and field curvature, Sigma has tapped into its long history as a lens pioneer to overcome those issues in this new generation lens.

"Our experience with the wide angle designs of our 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 II DG HSM and our 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM, and our research and development in our Aizu factory have prepared us for this technological advancement,? he said. ?Our wide, glass-molded aspherical lens and the incorporation of Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass have optimized power distribution of the optical elements and compensated for various aberrations, as well as curvature of field at the widest angle. We?re extremely proud of this achievement."

The 18-35mm is the latest addition to the company?s company?s Art line of lenses, designed under the new Global Vision. The Global Vision lenses have a sleek new design with the manufacturing year stamped on the barrel, and are categorized by use into one of three groups: Art, Contemporary and Sports. The Art category delivers high-level artistic expression through sophisticated and abundant expressive power.

The new 18-35mm lens incorporates Sigma?s improved AF/MF switch and the use of Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) compound material, which has a high affinity to metal parts, consistently performs well at extreme temperatures, and reduces the size and weight of the lens. It is also compatible with Sigma?s new USB Dock, which will be available in coming months, enabling photographers to update lens firmware and adjust focus parameters from their computers.

Convenient handling is achieved with internal focusing and zooming, which prevents changes to the size of the lens. Additionally, the front part of the lens does not rotate, so special filters like circular polarizers can be used.

The 18-35mm lens? Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides sharp and high contrast images, even in backlit conditions. The petal-type hood that is supplied with the lens will provide extra protection from flare and ghosting. Sigma?s Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures a silent, high-speed AF function and the optimized auto focus algorithm results in smooth focusing and full-time manual focusing capability. Lastly, the nine-blade, rounded diaphragm creates an attractive, round bokeh at large-aperture settings.

Sigma did not say anything on that topic. The guesstimates on the internet are all over the place, ranging from 750 to 2000?. I'd guess it most likely will end at 999? list price and may drop to 800-900 with the availability.

Interesting specs.

I'll copy/paste my thoughts I've written elsewhere about this announce, which I think is cool and innovative btw.

"Well, its cool news for sure, but this particular lens will only be embraced by the majority of the APS-C crowd if it can be priced down to the level that APS-C owners can swallow. Jared Polin speculates this kind of new tech will probably hit the market close to $1000-1200 and that is the territory of full frame zoom prices.

And if such technology gets translated to full frame mount, the price, size & weight can only go up another magnitude.

I'm curious to see how this new lens paradigm will play out over the next few years. If other makers adopt and adapt this for other mounts...then I'll be excited.

And in response to this comment

I definitely don't want a full-frame 1.8 zoom--they're heavy enough as-is!

The idea, though, that you can get the same isolation as a FF shooter AND compensate for a crop sensor's stop or so ISO deficiency?

Pros that shoot APS-C or would like to would certainly welcome a lens like this--what's not to love (except that the range isn't great)?

I said:
They're the only subgroup I can see who will realistically consider such a lens, but even then it's a zoom range where it's use for portraiture isn't all that great, especially if it's being marketed as an 'art lens'. I can imagine a larger zoom range would make its size rival those of telephoto zooms or primes
What i hope is in a few years this ability to manufacture constant f 1.8 aperture zooms can be done for a similar price as f 2.8 zooms are being made now. But we all now wider max apertures require bigger lenses and glass for a given sensor size.

Lets keep this thread alive!

Samples range from sunny daylight to low AL, both ends and f1.8.

First price-indications:

According to at least 2 independent persons the Sigma germany website had for a brief moment an MSPR online, being 999 EUR. Considering that all lenses are traded at least 10% below MSPR (at least over here), that'd put the actual resale-price at like 900? or less. The new Sigma 35mm Art 1.4 also has an MSPR of 999 EUR and was down to 830 EUR within 1 month after availability, currently (4 month later) its at 800 EUR.

Seriously, if the quality holds up to all the other new "Art" lenses and if the price will actually be at said 800ish, I'd probably get try to get rid of my 30/1.4, don't get any WA-lens which I considered, and get that. It easily replaces a set of 18/24/30/35mm fixed lenses.

A british shop just listed the lens for both Canon and Nikon mount for GBP 999! Seems that the MSPR of 999 [regional currency] is becoming reality! :D

would love this as my 3rd lens now :p too pricey for me for a while tho :(

Updated Preview/First Impressions over on DPR, now with a more precise price-guessing of $1000-$1500. Also that preview got promoted by Sigma America on Facebook, so this might either be a "bad" preview because they are impaired, or that they might know more than others (price-wise).

Conclusion
The Sigma 18-35mm ?/1.8 DC HSM "A" lens packs a big punch in features and image quality without a big punch to the wallet. Shockingly sharp images at all apertures, even at ?/1.8, with excellent flatness of field and good control over chromatic aberration, distortion and vignetting make this lens a no-brainer for users of APS-C cameras looking to upgrade from their kit lens. Furthermore, the lens has excellent built quality with smooth zoom and focus actuation and a nice, hefty heft to it that brings to mind the feel of high-end professional-level zoom lenses. With a super-fast constant ?/1.8 aperture that produces surprisingly great images, packaged with excellent build quality, and at the same time having a price that dramatically undercuts the competition, the new 18-35mm ?/1.8 DC HSM "A" is sure to become a top seller for Sigma. (As we said at the top, if you want one of these any time this year, you'd better get in line quick.)

-edit2-
The pricing: Apparently its $799 in the US but ?999 in the EU/Germany . I might just end up buying this thing in october stateside. Even with import tax thats way cheaper. And that is if I can't avoid tax.

I think that'd be a good move.

The lens does sound interesting.

Lets keep this up, because my excitement for this lens is all over the place and I can't fucking wait to get my hands on one :D.

Verdict:
You should congratulate the Sigma Corporation and their optics specialists for two reasons. Firstly for their courage ? they attempted to produce an instrument no other company had tried to construct before. Such a situation a lot can be forgiven so their product didn?t have to be outstanding. Still it is obvious Sigma wasn?t contended with half measures; not only they manufactured a unique instrument but also made it optically excellent in many categories.

And on the matter of price development:

US is still at 799 USD, germany still at 999 EUR, poland around 3400 PLN. The news: Several UK-shops list it now for a mere 649 GBP (used to be 999GBP)

And a UK special:

You can now win a free example of this lens from Sigma UK. More information to be found here:
