Sleeper Thread

I just can't believe that you guys are saying that the M5 is not a sleeper? It's the grand daddy of sleepers.

I have a couple, both belong to my friend.

First is his daily driver, 88 Ram with an LS1, 4L60, headers, intake, exhaust. (Considering adding a cam & Procharger)

His other car looks just like any other 98-02 Z28...looks stock with the stock wheels, exhaust tips, full interior...but it runs 10.5x on motor, and here it is on it's first ever nitrous pass (50 shot):

heads/cam/intake LS2, stalled/geared on MT drag radials. plenty of weight reduction as well...

Here is is running without the heads, making 424rwhp running against a turbo SS and a whipple cobra, as well as a 408ci camaro

Depends on your definition of sleeper. Personally i think both the E28 and E34 M5s are sleepers but from the E39 on not so much

I think sleeper would be anything that could embarrass your normal traffic light racer retard. So pretty much all but the latest M5 would qualify.

except that you look at E39 or E60 m5 and it looks like it SHOULD embarrass anyone at a stoplight. The whole point of a sleeper is being fast without looking fast (or actively trying to look slow) and the E39+ m5s look fast.

For me the E60 M5 is borderline, since everyone and their mom around here drives around in a 520d with the M-Sport pack the only way to spot an M5 is the rear bumper and quad exhausts, but even my grandmother knows a car with quad exhausts is going to be fast as hell (I know carbaged civics blablabla, most people that aren't complete retards can spot ricers too).

Edit: I'd like to add that many (not-car-enthusiast) people associate cars like BMW's, Audi's, and Mercedes' with fast (because most are indeed faster than your average Golf or Civic) which also takes away a bit of the sleeperness.

About 25 years ago I read a story about the German tuner Artz wrapping a Mk 1 Golf body around a Porsche 928. It looked pretty much like a normal Golf (At least until it was parked next to a stock Golf) except that it was a lot faster. I'm at work right now, so I'll try to find some pictures when I get home in a few hours.

Annoyingly, over here the GMC Acadia has stared appearing with quad exhausts from the factory.

The E60 is kind of borderline, even I have to do a double take sometimes to tell it from a "standard" 550. The E92(?) M3 is definitely not a sleeper though that bulge in the hood is wayyy too aggressive. At the same time standard cars are getting more aggressive looking. Current A4/A5 sometimes confuse me because I think I'm looking at the S model. Those things are way more aggressive looking than my gen A4, which looks like a Passat.

I think the main reason that M/RS/AMG cars are starting to lose that sleeper status is because the standard models are starting to look faster than they actually are so when you see one you expect to take off like an M/RS/AMG car even if it has a 4 banger under the hood.

Given, Mark VIIIs weren't exactly slow by early/mid 90s standards, but this one puts 450 hp to the wheels and runs 11.7 quarter miles. Other than the Cobra badges added to the front fenders there isn't much to give away what lurks under the hood.

Linky.

Bogstandard exterior? Check.
More power than the exterior suggests? Check.
Sleeper?

Taking an early E34 M5 as a benchmark, it doesn't look any more powerful and is larger, but will roughly keep up 0-100.

Skoda: The best car for everything ever in the world.... of all time.

This is a real sleeper.... sure even if you noticed the big rear tires, you wouldn't think it was THAT fast... but you'd be wrong.

Well, forgive me for not reading the first few pages of a two year old thread. :p

No BMW, Audi or Merc can be a sleeper.

..................
It depends I think. On your side of the pond with lots of diesels and tiny engined ones running around it can. In the US where we tend to get the faster ones probably not. Then again way new ones look....
