That swap is getting to be so relatively common in the US that that's not a sleeper any more.

I'd just like to say that apparently I had no idea what a 'sleeper' was.

I thought a sleeper was a car with a decent exterior but a powerful heart, like an M5 or something. So it's really shitty cars with bonkers engines?

Sleepers are just cars that are much quicker than you expect based on their exterior appearance. So the cars in this thread plus stock vehicles such as the M5 could count as sleepers.

Yeah, I was thinking cars with an unassuming exterior whether cheap or expensive. But everyone posted cheap cars so I questioned myself. :D

Well, if we're getting in to definitions, I might as well add that they are also known as "Q-cars".

A stock M5 is not a sleeper. Any knowledgeable car guy will know to expect a swift movement from it. But it can be a sleeper if the M5-identifying features are removed. The E60 M5 is most definitely the opposite of a sleeper, its a show-er. Of course, remember that this only applies to the automotive knowledgeable....if you put a red lambo and a red zonda side by side your avg person will think hes looking at two ferraris.

But as bartboy said, sleepers are cars that look very ordinary and slow but will surprise the hell outta you.

One of my favorite sleepers is the Turbo Minivan: (aka older Dodge Grand Caravans with the turbo 4 cylinders)

The van on the left lane is running mid 12s!

What the hell are you talking about ? "M5 is not a sleeper"....M5 is THE sleeper in my books. Based on your argument those Dodge vans are not sleepers, because
"Any knowledgeable car guy will know to expect a swift movement from it".

Sleeper is any ordinary looking car that happens to go like stink and the M5 is one, especially E34 and E39. Same goes for pretty much any AMG and RS car ever made. This thread just happened to go into the direction of beater looking sleepers.

M5 is not sleeper....some people...

Nist7 is right. Any M or AMG car is NOT a sleeper. When i see either i know what its capabilities are. You wouldn't know the capabilities of a sleeper until you look under the bonnet or see it in action.

A guy in these parts drives around in a primed Volvo 242 from the mid-70's. It looks totally stock, but under the hood lies a tuned, 5-cylinder 850R engine. See if i can get a few photos of it at the next race.
