Suzuki Vitara 1.6 Automatic JLS. OK, symptoms.

-late gear changes, sometimes the car will rev to 4-5k when not flooring. usually changes 10-15 seconds later than it should be doing, again, not flooring.

-giving some/little throttle during reverse gives almost zero response in movement (like giving throttle in neutral). give a lot would result in some crazy monkey ass jerking wtf (happened once).

-probably unrelated but this came up the same time the problem came up. The 4WD lever make a rattling sound which annoys the shit out of me. i have to put my hand over it to make it go away.

Cookie... who wants a coookie. Dont stop me now im having such a good time, im having a ball yeah.

How many kms on it ?
Been off-roading lately ? (doubt not, most SUV owners don't, ever.)

Automatic, huh ? Oil/filter ( in the tranny) replaced lately ?

But I suspect something more important in the transmission... :(

Still under warranty ?

It's old. '97, bought it second hand about 2 years ago. Never go off-roading. about 180000km done. I don't think it's the oil/filter, it seems more serious.

Before the problems came up, a regular service at a mechanic showed that some things had to be changed like the timing belt and some other stuff. Those bastards sabo'd my car!

old auto trannys will begin to slip like that. a slipping automatic will not let you put on full power since it's not letting all power from engine > wheels, and it will alter gear changes because of it. the other mr2 that the guy i bought mine from has a slipping tranny and it barely goes uphill over 15mph.
since auto trannys are way complicated, dont even try to ask me what it is exactly, go to a tranny expert.

Two things to look at.
One would be the Transmission Modulator. If this starts to go on the auto tranny will start to slip.

Second would be, and this is wierd, but the catalytic converter. Does your exhaust smell like rotten egss / sulfur? (insert joke here)

Get the cat changed. It could be choking the motor causing bad shifts.

I doubt the cat is caughing up. The exhaust seems (or smells) the same. Thanks anyway.

either ur tranny is slipping.. or this happened to me.. the throttle control sensor needs to replaced or reset. does it sometimes when u turn it on, the rpms just go up like the gas pedal is stuck? inanycase go to a mechanic do a diagnosis to ur sensors.

Yeah, as logo said, I think maybe replacing the Throttle Positioning Sensor is a good idea, inexpensive too. :)

This sounds exaclty like the time when I screwed up my 4wd Bronco.
At the time my friends seemed to think that it more likely was a slipping transfer case rathrer than a slipping automatic transmission.

ESPN might be right... it could be your diff slipping, have you changed the lubricant in your diff lately, alot of people forget about it.
Another possibility is that it might be your Torque Converter in your Gearbox that is giving way, your car is approaching 200,000km and this is usually the time that Auto-gearbox starts to give problems, as some people said, bring it to a Auto-transmission Expert to have a look, look at Motor-trader Zyran, I remember seeing loads of ads for transmission experts

hahaha burnouts wit a suzuki vitara...my frens got one and the last thing the car will do is a burnout.....no offence zyran

Come to think about it. The day the problems started I was at a parking basement and I just put my foot down and got a loud screech from the tyres. Coincidence? I don't think so.
