Well, I haven't tried those... But one thing I can tell you: The quality won't get any better... But you are going to safe your old stuff from getting worse by the second...
I guess, if you can afford it, and think its worth it -> go for it!

Some old movies, like your first steps (I think my Dad taped those...) are precious... But be aware: Your kids are going to rant about you, because its not in HD ;-)

Probably cheaper to rig your computer to do it. Need a VIVO videocard and a proper soundcard to get the sound to the computer and a DVD burner so you have the disc. I've done that before, it's easier than it sounds, depending on the parts you get it might even be cheaper.

I'm sure the unit works well enough though, Sony makes pretty good stuff. Obviously much easier than rig'ing your pc to do it. :bangin:
