Spy Shot: Audi A5 Coupe

Audi A5 Coupe: The pictures may show a four-door Audi A6, but underneath that familiar saloon body is an all-new platform and chassis, which will first be used for a two-door coupe. This chassis will form the basis of the next-generation A4 and A6 ranges - the next A4 is scheduled for launch in autumn 2008, for the 2009 model-year.

Design: However, first up on the new underpinnings will be the A5, a coupe to be positioned (as its name indicates) between the A4 and A6 ranges in price and size. The A5's styling will be influenced by that of the Nuvolari concept car - also reflected in the proposals for the next-generation TT, as seen in the Shooting Brake prototype.

Design: It will be a roomy four-seater, intended to rival the Mercedes-Benz CLK and BMW 3-Series coupes. It is expected to be launched in late 2007; a year later, a soft-top cabriolet version with cloth hood will replace the current A4 cabrio.

Artist's Illustration: The A5 is to have a Volkswagen sister model on the same platform, to slot in between the Passat and Phaeton ranges and to make its debut at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. This may be larger, and could even have four doors: it's intended to be Volkswagen's answer to the Mercedes-Benz CLS and even Porsche Panamera.

It'll be nice to see a road going Nuvolari. That was such a beautiful looking car.

the Nuvolari is amazing looking
We recently posted on this spy shot of an Audi wearing A6 sheetmetal on top of what is most certainly not A6 mechanicals. 4Car reported that the mule was Audi?s upcoming A5 coupe, but The Car Connection begs to differ. According to TCC the mule is actually an Audi A9 prototype, a.k.a. the Le Mans concept that debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2003 and is slated for production in 2007. At this point who knows what it is really is, but after a closer inspection of the extremely wide rear rubber we?re going with TCC?s guess that you?re looking at an A9 mule.

Meanwhile, The Car Connection has found shots of what it believes is an actual A5 mule wearing the skin of what appear to be an RS4. The design is of the A5 is said to be inspired by the Nuvolari concept that debuted alongside the LeMans concept at the 2003 Frankfurt Auto Show. Though the Nuvolari concept is a coupe, the A5 will be a canvas-top convertible aimed to put Audi ahead of the A4 cabriolet?s competition, which includes the BMW 3-Series convertible, the Mercedes CLK and the upcoming VW Eos. Does that mean there?ll be a price drop on the A4 cabriolet? Doubtful, but we can dream.
