What lies underneath this ugly BMW test shell will eventually rival Mercedes-Benz's imminent R-Class, which is a low-slung luxury MPV.

The project has been developed under the working title of Space Functional Concept (SFC), but some sources have suggested that this could presage a whole new V-series of cars, most likely introduced by a V5 or V6 model, and followed by a more compact V3 later (currently dubbed Sports Activity Coupe), possibly a top-end, driver-focussed alternative to the Ford Focus C-MAX, SEAT Altea et al.

The former will be built in Europe, intended for a European market, says BMW chief exec Helmut Panke; the latter in Spartanburg, South Carolina as BMW expects the majority of sales to come from America.

BMW is very interested in competing in the ever-morphing MPV market, and the working title of the project hints at the people-carrying theme that BMW has in mind for it. The SFC should blend design and mechanical elements from the 5-Series Touring, 6-Series coupe and 7-Series luxury four-door, with a long wheelbase carving out more room for rear passengers, and a suitably opulent cabin.

There have even been rumours of four-wheel drive for the larger of the two model ranges. The platform being used on this test mule is thought to be that of a 7-Series, and Autocar has pointed out that a complete 7-Series dashboard can be spotted through the window.

Marketing boss Michael Ganal told German newspaper Die Welt last year that while the crossover wouldn't be the most spacious, it would certainly be a class-leader to drive.

BMW has been slow to turn its attention to the emerging luxo-estate segment. The company is said to have been worried that the radical model would compromise on handling. Weight-saving options for the engineering team mooted in the motoring press have included a carbon-fibre roof and dramatically redesigned suspension.

lol... why would they cover the car like that... hopefully the real one doesn't come remotely close to that

but usually they never cover it to that extent, its usually just take and we can see the shape of the car

It's a mule, to test different sets of transmissions, engines, suspensions, and other stuff.

It may even be of other brand with those lights.

true - but this must be a vehicle very early in it's development cycle, so the stying is probably still being played with while the engineering boys play at the 'ring with mechanical prototypes - so they just find some scrap steel lying around and voila!!

Edit: like Bihus said up there^

I'm trying to work if the dash is from the 5 or 7 series
Edit again: Stupid me just read the text of the article...

Apologies for editing my post after you'd replied to it...

thats the best mule i've ever seen

It looks like BMW are designing a new tank for their army :p  It'll be the only tank with perfect 50-50 weight distribution and rear wheel drive!

And a needlessly confusing vehicle interface system!

i want that briefcase.....maybe ill look more executive then eh?

Well, there are other rumors that say that it's gonna be a X6...

Here are first photos confirming BMW's official statement made at the last Geneva Motor Show. The Bavarian carmaker is about to extend the X5 model range with an additional 4x4 "coupe," based on the same platform.

In this case, the word "coupe" does not mean a two-door, but, as in Mercedes CLS500 marketing jargon, refers to a sporting model with coupe-like roofline, even if it has four doors.

Rumors are that the new model will be named the X6. The first development mule is now doing laps at Germany's famous N?rburgring. These early development mules have a clever modular frame that allows all weight- (and, therefore, handling-) critical items to be positioned differently and in small steps, in order to find their optimum position for superior road-holding, handling, steering, and comfort. Similarly, the mules offer easy access to the suspension geometry, springs, dampers, and steering, which all can be varied and fine-tuned.

The test mule sports a non-production body made as simply as possible to cover the mechanical parts. It offers no indication of the final vehicle's styling or design.

The newcomer is reported to be a sporty looking crossover four-door, four-seater. It gets front-mounted engines ranging from a V-8 with either 340 hp or 450 hp, to a V-10 with 612 hp.

BMW hopes to be alone in this "coupe" market. By offering a high seating position and four-wheel drive, they would be without a direct competitor, at least initially. That's only until Porsche brings on the Panamera, a four-door coupe due in 2009.

Just like the current and the next X5, the new X6 will be built in the United States in South Carolina and is scheduled for release in 2008.

But i don't think it's a BMW underneath, why would they reveal them self like that?
