6.3-litre engine: We've already brought you photos of the refreshed E-Class saloon, but here's the estate version - and it's the range-topping E63 AMG. With its AMG-developed 6.3-litre V8, as used in the S63 AMG, it's thought to develop 470bhp-500bhp.

AMG styling: As with the mainstream E-Class models, the E63 features a new-look front grille, bumper and taillights, plus extra AMG body styling kit and unique wheels.

Suspension modifications: All E-Class models will receive minor modifications to suspension and steering, and will lose the SBC (Sensotronic Brake Control) electronic brake-by-wire system, which has proved unpopular and a little problematic.

Mild make over: These mildly made-over models will be launched at the Geneva Motor Show (March 2006); Mercedes hopes they will stave off the competition from the increasingly powerful 5-Series and A6 ranges (check out our other spy shots stories on the upcoming M5 estate and S6 Avant) until the all-new E-Class arrives in 2008. This is expected to feature Mercedes' new camless engines with electrically-driven valvetrains, and turbocharged, rather than supercharged, units. Hybrid versions are also likely. In the meantime, Mercedes is to offer new direct-injection petrol engines in the E-Class from next year.

In black please :D

I'm actually looking forward to its half-life facelift because they have made substancial changes.

The front grill is more agressive and angular, the door mirrors are off the CLS, the rear taillight assembly is also slightly diffrent.

There will also be a few interior changes coming from the CLS.

ok im a hc Benz fan but Im confused a bit, are the 63 AMG gonna replace the 55 AMGs? If so why is the new S-Class coming as a S65 rather than an S63? I thought the 65 AMG were reserved for the flagship benz (S, SL, CL) as a special release/edition?

The 63's replace the 55's over a period of time.

2006 will see the new CLS63, E63 and CLK63 along with the already announced ML & R63 models.

The S-Class will get its 63' engine but as I said in the S65 AMG thread, there will be no S63 until 2008 unfortunatly.

That should clear things up ;)

Well the new V8 still makes around the same horsepower as the old one, they just opted for more displacement instead of a supercharger. It might be a little bit quicker, I mean if you're going to replace something why not replace it with something better?

And camless engines, that's extremely interesting, it would mean continually variable valve timing, I would assume.

E-class estate is buttugly, it looks so huge you get it mixed up with a van. I mean it's REALLY ugly and they haven't reshaped it a bit. Well maybe that would be too expensive to do as a facelift.
It's a shame, I actually do like the C-class estate, it's quite sexy. E-class on the other hand is like a shipping crate on wheels.

I think the increase is big enough. Its gone from 476 to 510BHP. Remember the M5 has 507. It also has much more torque than the M5.

TBH, I don't think that engine even needed replacing after all those years. It was still able to mix it up with the M5.
