We've already written about the exterior of the revised Mini (see earlier Spy Shots), but here is an exceptionally detailed first look at its heavily revised interior. Overall, the layout is little changed, with a striking T-shaped dash and centre console, with a bold horizontal plinth punctuated by air-vents and dials, but there are big detail changes on the vertical central console.
For a start, central speedometer is larger, and the controls below that have become considerably more striking and more styled, whereas the current car uses some bespoke BMW switches. Directly below the speedometer is the stereo and, in the case of the higher-specification car (the one with the wooden dash), a DVD satellite-navigation system. Note there are no major controls on those. On the more basic car, the stereo controls are located in the lower half of the speedometer unit, on the high-spec car, there's an LCD display within the centre of the speedometer, while the systems are controlled by a derivative of BMW's iDrive system - see the stalk and two buttons located behind the gearlever, in front of the handbrake.
Below the stereo unit are the heater controls, with LCD display on the higher-spec car, then below that are toggle-switches, as in the current car. Meanwhile, we expect to see the ignition re-housed to the dashboard behind the steering wheel, possibly with a fob-style key as in the latest BMWs, rather than a conventional key.
Other changes include new steering wheels, with stereo/system controls on the spokes of some models (likely to be a feature on the Mini's lengthy options list) and a new design for the door trim, where the electric mirror control will also now be housed.
