We've already written about the exterior of the revised Mini (see earlier Spy Shots), but here is an exceptionally detailed first look at its heavily revised interior. Overall, the layout is little changed, with a striking T-shaped dash and centre console, with a bold horizontal plinth punctuated by air-vents and dials, but there are big detail changes on the vertical central console.

For a start, central speedometer is larger, and the controls below that have become considerably more striking and more styled, whereas the current car uses some bespoke BMW switches. Directly below the speedometer is the stereo and, in the case of the higher-specification car (the one with the wooden dash), a DVD satellite-navigation system. Note there are no major controls on those. On the more basic car, the stereo controls are located in the lower half of the speedometer unit, on the high-spec car, there's an LCD display within the centre of the speedometer, while the systems are controlled by a derivative of BMW's iDrive system - see the stalk and two buttons located behind the gearlever, in front of the handbrake.

Below the stereo unit are the heater controls, with LCD display on the higher-spec car, then below that are toggle-switches, as in the current car. Meanwhile, we expect to see the ignition re-housed to the dashboard behind the steering wheel, possibly with a fob-style key as in the latest BMWs, rather than a conventional key.

Other changes include new steering wheels, with stereo/system controls on the spokes of some models (likely to be a feature on the Mini's lengthy options list) and a new design for the door trim, where the electric mirror control will also now be housed.

I really dislike this trend towards putting the speedometer in the center. I feel like it just invites people to criticize the driver.

There's an option that if you get the Sat-nav they move the speedo to driver's side. I agree with you about the speedo.

Well, maybe it's less plasticy, I got in one a month ago at an Auto Show and it was pretty plasticy all that silver plastic for wipers, signals, lights, cruise, radio. Looks like they toned it down a bit, I dunno.

Yeah, I've seen models with that. I wish it was that way standard.

Yeah, it was like that in the old model. But if you look at the pics this doesn't seem to be the case anymore.
Radio and Navigation seems to be somewhat "integrated" into the Speedo. The interior acutally looks cheaper IMO, e.g. the gear lever.

Thumbs way down for me!

Luckily, the australia design rules say the speedo must be beind the steering wheel so the big dial in the middle becomes the tachometer here, but it's still really annoying and its kinda ugly in the current model. i'd much rather get the SatNav and put the speedo and tacho behind the steering wheel.

that said i do like the integrated satnav/speedo in the picture above as well at the door trim in the last picture, very funky. the rest of the interior i'm indifferent on

well i think the speedo can be in the middle if u get the nav system, cause that screen is put in the middle then and the speedo behind ur wheel with ur rpm :)

I don't like it at all, interior and exterior ( mostly how big it is for the exterior ).

Screw the MINI.

I'll drive a Mini anyday but they'd have to give the new one to me to see me behind the wheel of one. Sad how they lost the soul of the original trying to redo a classic.

^ actually all the people that own one say it drives great, and it's still funky. so.. you're not quite right. too bad its kinda overpriced for what it is imo.

hang on a minute, didn't they move the speedo to the drivers side beside the tach in the recent facelift?... and I think the new speedo thing is abit over the top?... its just a tad too big for me

Have you ever driven a Yaris with the holographic display in the middle of the dash? It's impossible for anyone but the driver to see the revs or speed.

I don't own a Mini but I've driven the Cooper S. It does drive great and it really is a lot of fun! :)
But yeah, it's also overpriced for the size of the car, unfortunately.

Anyone who criticizes my driving, can get out and walk. :D

It can drive great, I don't care and good for those who bought one but ... This is not the old Mini. It was the smallest thing on the road, not anymore, It used to be cheap, I think everybody agrees this thing is pricey. And the reason it is pricey is all the gizmos they put in it, well wasn't the original a nothing-but-the-bare-necessities car ? That's why I say the soul of the original is gone. How it drives doesn't make up for the rest.

Just my 2?.

^ yeah you're right, but if they did that to the new mini, then it'll fail, atleast in this time. Face it, true mini lovers might buy it, but that'll be it... a car must develop, and they did develop it, its still rather small and quick... what do u want more? it looks cool too.. thats it.. thats the classic imo. Concerning the price, well if it'd be still cheap, then it'll be cheap itself compared with most cheap cars nowadays.. BMW are asking alot, but hey.. it built and drives like a bmw, and reliable too. I think they kept its charm, and still made it modern. I guess we'll never agree you and I :p ahh well ;)
