Under the grey tarpaulin sits the next performance-focussed Renault Clio. We've already seen prototypes of the standard five-door Clio with minimal camouflaging, and from all accounts the next Renault supermini's looks are very evolutionary - don't expect a smaller version of the bustle-bummed Megane when it arrives in autumn 2005. The hottest Clio, of course, will have just three doors, and this shorter version hasn't been seen without disguise yet - so there could be a few bold surprises under that cover...
Renaultsport probably won't tinker too much with the Clio 182's winning mechanical formula, though. Expect a 2.0-litre petrol engine developing in the region of 190bhp, and a suspension rejigged for exceptional handling. Lightweight, even sharper Cup variants could roll out later. In the meantime, expect a stripped-out version of the current Clio 182 to be offered as a limited-edition run-out model before this one is launched.
