4Car has already driven a prototype version of Suzuki's next compact 4x4, but these pictures show that the production version is still undergoing hot-weather endurance testing in advance of its launch.
The SX4 (a name which has not yet been confirmed, but is expected to be the likely name for the finished model) is based on Suzuki's Swift supermini platform and will fit in the Suzuki range between the Swift itself and the upcoming new Vitara. It will replace the Liana/Aerio range, but will combine supermini practicality and drivability with a high-riding, off-roader-style stance and a torque-on-demand four-wheel-drive system (front-wheel-drive versions are also expected).
The SX4 will come with Suzuki's 1.5 and 1.6 petrol engines (99bhp and 107bhp) or the Fiat 1.9 JTD turbodiesel (120bhp). It will also come with a Fiat badge: Suzuki is to build a version for Fiat, to be called the Sedici, alongside the SX4 at its plant in Hungary. Both cars have been styled by Giugiaro, but the Fiat is said to look more rugged and aggressive than the Suzuki.
Both cars will be unveiled in late November in advance of the Bologna Motor show, with production versions launched at the Geneva Motor Show next spring.
