Hi!

Perhaps some of you guys (especially those from the US) can help me...

I finished school this summer and now I'm planning a 3-4 months stay in the USA. (starting in October)
Which city would you prefer and why? (advantages, disadvantages, weather, etc.)

Thanks in advance! :)

*cough* urgent! *cough*

My vote would be for San Deigo. Been living here for the last few years and have no plans on moving. Good weather all year round. It is expensive but so is San Fran. and Seattle.

Why not go to all three? If you are just looking for one though, they are all quite different. Seattle is really nice if you're into music\art\culture related stuff, but I couldn't imagine spending 3-4 months there. There isn't that much to do, and the stereotype is true - it does rain a lot. Especially from October on. You will be soaked, all the time. If you like hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, rain forests, rivers etc., there is lots of wilderness in a very short drive. Once the Americans drive you insane, you can get to British Columbia in Canada within 3 or 4 hours - it's much nicer anyway. :p

I've only been to San Francisco a few times and haven't spent much time there, but I remember it being quite fun. I would imagine there would be a lot to do, and it's in California, so the weather would be great over that time period. The weather wouldn't be as nice as San Diego, but close. There is a a lot of touristy stuff in San Francisco, so if you're looking for that, it would be the place to go.

San Diego is also great. It's extremely warm, has great beaches, and is within driving distance of Mexico, Los Angeles and the Joshua Tree National Park (my favourtie place in California).

Overall it would be an extremely hard choice. I'd recommend Seattle or San Diego though.

I used to live in Seattle. Its a nice place to visit but a decent place to live, IMO. The weather is consistently rainy, which I actually like, but the people that live there are not too friendly. It took us a long time to find any friends there. But the scenery is beautiful with Mt. Rainer in the distance and the North Cascades near by. I would probably recommend it, but not too highly. It has a lot of advantages but a couple big disadvantages. Although, that may be down to just my experience there (big trouble with our house, location, etc.).

San Francisco is nice, but I dont know if I would want to live there. But I have only been there a few times, so I cant judge it entirely.

San Diego is lovely. I really like San Diego and I hope that I can go to college there. Beautiful all the time, and is nice and cool which I really like. Its just very relaxing and tranquil.

So, like zenon, I would recommend Seattle or San Diego. Cant really go wrong with either, just depends on what you are looking for.

If you go to Seattle, you might be close enough to visit Viper.

It kind of makes sense to go to all three since they are all on the west coast, within driving distance of each other.

But I would choose San Francisco if only one is allowed.

Hi!

Thanks for all your replies! :)

Seems like the majority of you (and I, partly because of the weather :p ) is tending towards San Diego...

Hehe, my gf is in Vancouver at the moment so I won't go there. Otherwise it would be an option perhaps... 8)
She is doing a business english-course/internship there and has been told (e.g. by her teacher) that San Diego can be a bit "boring". They said it doesn't have a real center and that it mainly consists of "suburbs"... :?:

PS: More replies are appreciated! :)

Ok, I'm going to San Diego at the end of the month! :)

I still need a fake ID though...

Hehe, yeah my father is already trying to "persuade" me that we need at least one more digital camera. (we got 2 so far)

Btw, I know the weather in San Diego is nice - one of the reasons I decided to go there actually 8) - but what kind of clothing will I need? I'm staying from Oct-Feb, are shirts sufficient even in "winter"?

cya & thx

Hi Guys!

Thanks again for all your Replies! :)

I'm now in San Diego since last Saturday and I'll stay here until February.
On Monday I started my "Business Communications"-course and after that I'll do an Internship.

Since fstopp lives here in San Diego he offered to hook me me up with the new Top Gear and Fifth Gear episodes. Thanks again fstopp, I'll come back to you! :)

Btw, do you have some sort of electronic ID check in your supermarkets?
Yesterday I bought beer at 7eleven and after scanning the products the cashier asked for my ID. I gave my german ID to her, she looked at it, typed something into the register (is this the right word?) and then asked me to pay...

He's 20 :p

Never been to Seattle but I liked both SF and SD, it would be a hard choice to pick only one.

SD's got better weather but I like the cachet of SF, it fells different, where SD feels like pretty much any other big city.

That"s right!
I faked my germand ID, it"s not perfect but my guess is that at least 9.5 out of 10 Americans don"t know how a real german ID looks...

 She was probably just making sure you were 21.

Does she have the possibility to actually check the data??
(I just changed my year of birth, I didn"t change any of those other numbers on the ID.)

She still sold the beer without complaining though...
