Subpixel smoothing

The fine detail is sharper in the subpixel-smoothed one (the 2nd). Look at the fine hair at the top of the cat, the sweater of the person and especially the suface of the cat box.

If you can't tell from the first glance I hardly think it's worth the effort. What's the big deal about this anyways?
 
You get more detail, but you also get more jaggies. I'm not sure it's all that much better than doing a smart sharpen after resizing.
 
It's not the same as smart sharpen, because it exploits the way pixels are formed on the LCD display. So theoretically it only works well on LCD displays. I don't have a CRT here to compare, but the difference is pretty subtle already, and it should be even smaller on the CRT.
