So after buying a VW Bora that then got flooded ... I bought another VW Bora (Sorry, no thread for either) which in a year I have invested around €7000 in repairs and maintenance it is still shit and has issues... I got to a point where that money is enough to pay a years worth of loan on something better ... And an EV get's a €5k rebate right now in Germany ... So it is kinda a no brainer.

Meet my new daily, Mario!

I collected it today, so it's a 2022 Model Y Long Range with base spec everything except the colour.

(That is the Bora in front ... I know about the brake light...)

So far I am really happy, it is a lot more comfortable than the earlier ones and it is really nice and quiet inside. The performance is good enough, I managed 220 indicated which should be around it's limited top speed GPS.

Baby seat is mounted and my daughter loves the fact that she has leg room! In the Bora her feet were resting on the seat in front!

I have done 360km since getting the and am still getting used to it, but it's a great family hauler!

Congratulations!

Good call that. I somewhat went the other way and would not do that again…

Also good to hear that the current cars are nice and quiet. Mine is not. No.

This actually surprised me a little, how well the model 3 works with a kid (car was here first). Only stupid thing is the low height trunk, that regularly gets in the way of stuff. But the back seat and room for the little one is actually very decent.

Yeah, the opening on the 3 was one of the things that killed it as an option for me in addition to the lack of any tow rating on it.

There is also a bit more leg room in the rear of the Y

Maybe resale on the Y will be better than the 3 too… people seem to like crossovers like this these days.

Congrats!

For an actual practical family car, imho the Y is leagues above the 3. The trunk opening is in another league, and so is the rear seat - it's not just a bit more legroom, it's a fairly massive difference in floor height which means not having your knees weirdly angled up during a long drive. The roof glass configuration also makes a lot more sense, looking from the back seat you don't have a horizontal beam right in front of your eyes but can instead look straight through.

I haven't yet sat in a Model Y but I agree that the differences over the Model 3 are big improvements, especially having a hatchback instead of the flippy boot lid. Other things like the rear leg room and the fact that being up means you feel less exposed by the low dash are also nice.

Of course, I'd love to see you take this thing down the dirt track but I get the feeling that it won't be happening. Would make a great tow vehicle though, did you buy the tow pack?

It’s a great color and the black accents (blackcents?) really make it.

@loose_unit offered to let me drive back from Decathlon yesterday and it is nice. While not for me as I’m not a fan of the higher riding position, but it is a nice car. Drives quiet, is fast, has good road manners, cruise control both full control and just speed and distance is some of the best. Lastly, the stereo is very good. This electric car experience was much better. :)

One of the nicest bits was when we needed to go into a Lidl, Hank stayed in the car and @loose_unit set the car to Dog Mode. So Hank was kept comfy. 😍

Yes, I got the towbar - It can tow 1600kg which means with a BE I can tow both of my other cars with it ... I don't yet have a BE though :-D

Went out for a bit of a family day today, we try to have one once a month as my daughters mother and I live separate.

First thing, the pram fits perfectly in the frunk... That is great!

After having experienced @Adrian 's Model X, this is a much better size for European roads, it fits in underground parking without issue:

While charging (I don't have home charging, otherwise I would not have needed to charge today at all) I fitted the scuff plates and screen protector I purchased.

I was expecting polished aluminium, instead I got this carbon stuff ... Doesn't bother me as it is only visible when the boot is open and it is only there to protect the plastic underneath:

I also tried to do some "normal" driving which would be about the speeds and right foot action I would do in my normal daily driving ... I got around 125wh/km which is fantastic!

I am very very happy so far with the comfort and practicality of the car, it really is a perfect daily

Nice. I haven't done the B+E test but we were all given it for freebies last year in the government attempt to recruit more delivery drivers, so now I can tow a big trailer. I just don't have a suitable tow car now since I sold Bugsy - d'oh!

Scuff protector looks good enough and that finish might not show the scuffs as bad as aluminium, while it does its job of getting beaten up.

Balls-e choice!

Perfect color and perfect name, haha.

Would be great if they could do that here too :-D It's not a cheap licence to get.

There may or may not be another balls plate for you if you want it ... Not a BallsE one though :p

Can always find additional uses for balls plates. It might end up on a race car for laughsies, bbbbuuutt

For about 40(?) or 44 euros, you can go to any plate maker and ask for what you want.

A conversation about where to buy plates is the most German thing ever, ironic considering three of the four participants aren't German. To be fair they may have all be converted to a German way of thinking. :p

Yes, I'm a bit jealous of the ability to just get plates with whatever you want on them.

There are rules, but if you just want a plate whether it fits the local town/county‘s character rules or not, there’s nothing stopping you but money.

You can literally ask them to make what ever ... You can't register it for an actual car though.
