Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends

I never said that the game will suck. My argument was only concerning value for money. All of the things you mentioned cost money, resources, and time to develop. But from a customer perspective - why am I forced to pay similar amount for money for two games, one of which offers 20 times the options and gameplay opportunities of the other?

To use a parallel with the music industry - EP's and singles(any record under 25 minutes) is sold at one price, LP's (full albums) are sold at another price, and then Double albums at a different.

With this game it looks like we will be getting the equivalent of an EP for the price of an LP. And they are doing it because they can! If Forza 4 was available on PC, we probably wouldn't even be talking about this game.

I once argued that Forza 3 DLC was not worth it because the base game contained x amount of cars and tracks for y dollars, and the DLC was so over-inflated per car/track that it was insulting. I still hold by that argument, but I would adjust the ferocity of it.

The wrinkle gets thrown in when you consider quality, specifically varying quality between titles. iRacing has ~25 cars. Each car costs $12. They have over 40 tracks. Each track costs $12 or $15. Together the price of the game is north of 600 dollars, especially when you consider the subscription fee required to play. Doesn't seem worth it, until you realize that these things are laser scanned and so accurately modeled that even the weights and velocities of the gears inside the transmission are modeled in real time. Then it becomes more valuable. One track can cost between $100,000 and $400,000 to build for iRacing, not even including whatever money changed hands during the licensing process.

So it becomes rather silly to argue that one game is worth it when another isn't, especially when the actual initial cost to make the content (and the effort put in) is a complete unknown. TD:F could have cost under a million to make, or it could have cost over 10 million to make. Who the hell knows.

Good point, but at the end we are the customers - the one that pay money for their product. It does not really matter to me how much it costs them, as long as the final product that I buy is worth it. And by that criteria Forza is a much better value for money.

Sure...Forza may be more expensive to develop, but what is stopping Slightly Mad and Atari of getting more sponsorship, obtaining more funding and ultimately producing a competitive product? Sadly, there is not really that much competition on the PC platform anymore.

Looks like NFS Shift 2 physics, no thanks. Even if it has 1000 cars, I'm not playing another game on that physics engine.

Official date announced - March 6, 2012

But it's Atari we are talking about, so it's safe to assume there will be a delay.

Inside Sim Racing's preview makes me want this game.

The detail and selection of Ferraris are pretty amazing. I've been contemplating the idea of getting Forza 4 mainly for its selection of my favourite Ferraris that GT5 doesn't have (355, F50, 250, etc.), but that would mean spending a lot of money buying a Crapbox 360 and another wheel since the Crapbox doesn't support my DFGT. Who cares if it has Shift 2 physics, it's no GT5 or Forza, but it's still pretty decent (and it should be even better than Shift 2 since it's basically an update).

Can't wait for this to come out (May 15th)! :D

Having watched that video I'm now quite interested in this...

The only thing, this being a game from Slightly Mad, I absolutely want to try this out before I get this. The Shifts were a massive letdown because of the horrible pad steering. If they have that sorted this could be awesome...

Really looking forward to this too. They keep pushing back the damn release date though, now expected early June.
Really like the fantasy open road circuit but physics look very similar to Shift 2. Hope they've played with it a little more since.

Seems decent enough. Looks far better than Ferrari licensed games of the past. Which were all shit.

I'm really not expecting ultra realistic physics. All I want is for the cars to look good, sound good and for there to be a lot to do in the game, which there seems to be. Also, the delays are annoying but I am willing to wait for a more polished game. :)

Edit: Found some more vids:

Edit 2: Found another video interview of someone who tested the game:

They're speaking Polish, but the video has English subtitles.

I also typed out the subtitles:

We, actually Raven had been in IQ Publishing testing Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends. So, we are going to ask him a few questions about the game.

In the beginning I want to say, I didn?t go alone I took my friend. He knows about racing games, but we want to check if this game is good for beginners. Secondly, we?ve been testing the preview version/beta so this is not the final build which we are going to see in May and like you said before, publisher in Poland is IQ Publishing. Game developer is Slightly Mad Studios, developer of NFS: Shift and Shift 2: Unleashed. Speaking of Shift 2, it has been ruined by Electronic Arts because they wanted to release a serious rival to GT and FM. Similar situation we have in Microsoft with Forza Motorsport. Turn 10 has big potential, especially hiring people in China, but they?re blocked by Microsoft because we don?t have a good wheel on X360, so Turn 10 can?t make a good sim, but this is a topic for a separate video. US publisher is probably Atari, in Europe it is BigBen Interactive. Currently, Slightly Mad Studios is working on Project CARS and this is funny because when we started to cover Project CARS, many people complained that this is Shift 2. Now we have the same situation with Test Drive Ferrari, but this game is nothing like Shift 2. A couple of days ago, we played Shift 2 and at the Nordschleife, on the first corner under the bridge I rolled over and I don?t know how that was possible but thanks to EA physics engine which is rubbish. Shift 2 is unplayable on both wheel and controller and if you like it, which means you are either 10 years old or you don?t have a driving license. Back to project CARS. I think that some elements of the game can be transferred to Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends. Another fact: in the last Project CARS builds we got new tracks and most of them are in Test Drive Ferrari. This game is nothing like Shift 2. Bear in mind, this is a preview version, so you can?t judge the game now.

As you said before this is a preview version this is not the final build. Will there be any changes, for example the main menu?

I?ve been talking about this. This probably changed. Furthermore, in this build we didn?t have multiplayer and possible split-screen. Next, driving aids; in this build we had three options, from Beginner where we only accelerate and steer, to Expert but we still had traction control and ABS on. This will be changed in the final version. Another thing: car selection and long loading between them and hopefully, loadings before the race.

Do you know if the menus will be changed, because the car selection, for example, looks kind of unfinished, if I need to be honest?

Hopefully. You can get lost while choosing a car.

You said before that this game is being compared to Shift 2. How can you compare these two games?

Seriously? It is hard to compare this game to Shift 2. Maybe only the barrier crash sounds are similar. If the game had driving physics from Shift 2 I probably would have not been able to record any footage. Graphics engine is similar to Need for Speed: Shift. When they started working on this game they were called Blimey! Games not slightly Mad Studios yet. They were working on a Ferrari Project game. I want to clarify one very important thing. This is not the third installment of the Test Drive Unlimited series. Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends is another installment of the Test Drive series where we have Test Drive Unlimited.

Can you say something about the career mode?

In the career mode we have three eras and this is a reference to Need for Speed: Porsche 2000 (or Porsche Unleashed). In the first few races in career mode we have this cool black and white filter which is on both on the beginning and ending of the race. I wish to see this filter during the whole race. Another cool thing, drivers actually look like they?re from 1950.

Old goggles, old helmets we have already seen it in the gameplay. Has something caught your attention?

Yes, in time trial mode we can have our own driving line when we finished our first lap on the track, which is our driving line from the fastest lap on this track. Thanks to that we can improve our lap times. Unfortunately, I don?t know if we can use driving lines from the time trial mode in other game modes. We will find out about it in May.

How many cars and tracks are in the game?

We have 52 Ferraris and at the end of our visit I said that it?s not enough. 52 Ferraris from different years. I?ve been missing the 599 XX, 599 GTO or even more F1 cars, but on the other hand many of them haven?t been in other racing games. Speaking of tracks, we have 36 of them. For example: Nordschleife, new Hockenheimring and old Hockenheimring which was magnificent. We also Have Imola from 2005 and from 1981 without the chicane on Tamburello corner. We can also race on Silverstone from 1959, we have Misty Loch circuit which is a fantasy track located in Scotland and of course, we also have Spa Francorchamps, unfortunately in the old layout from 2004. Another cool track: Monza, available also in the layout without chicanes. Big track selection but I wish to see more, like Fiorano or Circuit de la Sarthe.

Do you know something about future DLCs for this game?

No I don?t. However, I read rumours about three cars as DLC. But another thing is how they?re going to sell DLCs on PC? This is easy on PS3 (PlayStation Store) and X360 (Xbox Live Marketplace). On PC we have Games for Windows Love and Steam. I don?t think that this game will be available on Origin from EA.

I have a question about weather and time effects. As we know in Project CARS we have time progression, in Shift 2 we had night racing and what about Test Drive Ferrari?

In this build I was able to change the time of day (morning, afternoon and evening) and weather (sunny and cloudy). But like I said before, this is a preview version so this might be changed in the final build and hopefully that will be changed. Day time races are not as interesting as night time races and like you said, Project CARS has time progression. This might be indicating that this feature will appear in Test Drive Ferrari, but we will have to wait till May.

What about the car damage system? As we know, Ferrari is very exclusive and they might not be happy about crashing their cars in a racing game.

I haven?t had the occasion to test the damage system very deeply because I was focused on the track and lap performance, but a few times I went off the track directly into the wall and in the F2008 I torn off both the front and rear wings and in the 360 Modena I broke the left taillight. Bear in mind that this was the preview version/beta so it?s hard to say what Ferrari will do with the damage system in the full version.

What about mechanical damage?

Nothing about that in the game options, just like tire wear and fuel usage.

When you lost wings, have you had less grip?

Yes, I had. I was able to rollover and spin out in my F1 car.

For which platform was this preview version and what type of controllers were used during tests?

Preview version was for Xbox 360. Speaking of accessories, I had a very comfortable racing seat from BigBen, Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Steering Wheel and finally an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller. The game has very good and strong force feedback. After half an hour I had to switch to the controller because of it. It?s not easy to play on the controller. Even with driving aids turned on I had to be cautious. You can see this on the movie from Nordschleife (F430 Scuderia) where I?ve been playing with the controller.

That?s all we want to say. Can you remind us what is the release date?

There is no exact date but it?s coming in May 2012 on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. At the end of this video we want to thank IQ Publishing for inviting us to test the preview version of Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends.

Some pretty tasty info there. :)

Looks amazing!

Okay...I am ready to jump in the "excited" camp too.

I remember how 10 years ago people wished for a sequel of NFS: Porsche Unleashed with a different brand. Looks like it's going to come true after all.

Be sure to visit their Facebook page for the latest info and pics. :)

So is this game delayed again for US? I know it was May 15 but that facebook page says June 2012. Amazon.com still lists it as May 15.

Granted, this would not surprise me AT ALL, just want to confirm if it is...

Yeah it's been delayed a couple of weeks ago to June.

Ah. Okay. Well let us know in June when it gets delayed to July. :p
