Monty Panesar's manic appealing in the fifth Test in Trinidad has been compared by Aggers to "that car that goes as fast backwards as it does forwards. A Scimitar, was it?"

I don't think so. My money is on the car being a DAF of some description with its continuously variable belt-drive transmission.

Who's right - me, Aggers, or was it some entirely different machine?

I think you are right about the DAF. Although given Volvo bought them out and produced the Volvo 66 (a re-badged DAF with CVT) ... he could have been referring to that.

Actually (and this is what's called a link), Volvo has a history of making cars that are fast in reverse.

The very first one off the production line had its crown wheel installed the wrong way around giving it 3 reverse gears and one forward.

Or should I say:

DAF and the related Volvo 343 and 345 with the Variomatic CVT 'box.

Test Match special is a BBC radio commentary (broadcast) of Test Cricket Matches. They are usually very conversational and have a habit of going off on tangents.

I used to love listening to Brian Johnson (who died a few years ago) on Test Match special ... he was the Murray Walker of Cricket (he could make a dull game interesting) .. the current guys do a good job of filling his shoes, in particular Jonathan Agnew ... who Ironlord was referring to in the OP.
