TG on discovery channel

I could only find a torrent for the first episode. Would be nice to get a PM ;)

My bad, it's not up anymore from where I find them.

I cant STAND IT!!! The non widescreen format makes the segments feel claustrophobic and the "NEW" re-edited music is about the worst thing I have ever heard... The reshot scenes in the studio are of such poor quality you'd swear it was a Public broadcasting show done for free.. I HAVE SEEN NO REASON, to stop downloading the show... tell the BBC that next time you see it.

I actually did record wensday's TG, however I found out that after my recent format, something is causing my crappy TV card to record very dark, still watchable, but dark enough to loose details in some segment.

on top of that, Dr.Divx didnt work too well on last week's encoding (video/audio sync problem near the end), Im current looking for other encoding methods and seriosuly thinking about getting a decent TV capture card (not sure if that's gonna happen).

I'll try to encode it tonight, if Audio/Video sync problem happens again, I probably wont torrent it untill the problem's solved

In the last episode JC mentions that the Bobsled race is possibly the second best segment ever. Anyone know what he thinks the number one segment of all time is? Sounded like their was no question about it and he had a clear "number one".

Thats the difference between NTSC (never the same color) and PAL (perfection at last) systems used by the US and Europe. PAL is 24 frame, NTSC is 30 frame. The conversion process isnt the prettiest , But PAL is actually better then NTSC.

If you're OK with speeding up the frame rate by 1/25th and the resultant higher pitch of the audio, PAL is better ;)

Neither NTSC or PAL has a frame rate, they both render in "fields" -- interlaced halves of a frame. PAL is 50 fields per second (equivalent to 25 frames), NTSC is 60 fields per second (equivalent to 30 frames). These numbers tie back to the frequency of the power systems, to run the signal at the same frequency as the power to avoid interference (US has 110V 60Hz power, most others 220V 50Hz power). Both systems have the same bandwidth per channel IIRC, that's why PAL can afford the slighly better resolution because of its poorer refresh rate.

The problem is FILM SOURCES (like all movies and many quality TV shows) are 24 fps. To transfer that to PAL, they keep the video frames on a one to one level (where each frame generates two interlaced fields) and you end up playing back at one frame per second too quickly, roughly 5% too fast and the audio pitch goes higher as 1.05 seconds of sound is compressed into one second. This is why PAL movie runtimes are shorter than their theatrical counterparts. To transfer to NTSC, they do a 3:2 pulldown which preserves the timing but repeats an interlaced field from every other frame.

But soon we will all be ATSC (digital format) and all will be well in the world.
Dr.

Already there. No sense in arguing over 65 year old TV formats :)

But don't worry, now you can argue the virtues of 720p over 1080i. I'm a 720p guy because of the motion estimation.

Comments sent to discovery:

I was thrilled to see you picked up the rights for Top Gear. I have been downloading episodes from the internet for years and I love the show, by far the best car show on TV. However, please please please don't butcher the show by cutting it up. Just air the shows AS IS they are fine. Also, please air the episodes on Discovery HD theater in widescreen instead of distorting the aspect ratio to 4x3. By chopping up the show I think it's losing so much of the spontaneous banter that makes it entertaining. Features like the celebrity hot lap and the cool wall all make the show enjoyable and they have been CUT from the discovery version? Please consider airing the episodes in their original format.

Jeremy: "And then you're off! Like a scolded BEEP."

May: "Oh BEEP"

I can imagine the future shows... "What's the Norwegian for 'Oh BEEP'?"

mike_tseng, I did the divx encode last night and just like last week's audio/video sync near the end of video is off.
this is extremly annonying because I have done tons and tons of DVD .VOB to Divx conversion with Dr.Divx before without any A/V issue, looks like Dr.Divx dosent like .mpg files

I'll looking for other ways to have it encoded...till than...I dont think ill torrent the off sync video files

I don't like the butchered version. It's awesome that TG is finally in the US, but they really need to air the original episodes as they were intended to be seen. Please email Discovery (see previous posts) and BBC (bbc.co.uk/topgear) and let them know how thankful we are but also how much we'd prefer the originals.

The first time I saw the original Exige episode, I was blown away by the fact that it placed between the Lambo Gallardo and the 911 GT3 in the power lap board. But in this thing it's all alone by itself. And Stig doesn't play any music while driving! WTF!? :( :x

Quote during original episode Exige power lap commentary: "Oh dear, the Stig's baught a sort of... 'power ballad' album which he wants to play for us over the series... hasn't affected his driving though!" All this over Reo Speedwagon playing in the background... too funny. @#(*$) (bastards) Even the intro song was a dumbed down lower octave version of the original!

As much as I would like to see Discovery Channel air the full undoctored episodes, I don't think it would ever happen. While it may seem from our point of view on this forum that there are loads and loads of people who will appreciate the uncut version, DC has to attract an audience of hundreds of thousands of viewers every time they air the show or else they'll likely cancel it. To do this, they have to attract a whole lot of casual viewers, ones who will be flipping through the channels and park themselves on DC because it catches their eye.
Now, I can appreciate the humor and the writing of the show, but to the average american, a 7 minute review of a car called a "Vauxhall" or a "Renault" will mean absolutely nothing to them, even if the reviews are full of wit. They are cars that will never be marketed in america, and wouldn't captivate the attention of the audience of channel flippers.
In addition, the star in a reasonably priced car segment would not do well either. Talk shows in the US only survive by booking top-flight (mostly american) celebrities who will attract male and female viewers aged 18-50 in order to garner quality advertisers. I highly doubt many of those casual viewers DC needs who represent the males aged 18-50 would stop and watch top gear if they saw Jeremy interviewing Martin Clunes or Terry Wogan. Jordan, maybe...but Wogan, no.
The way DC is going about getting viewers is really the least risky (if not highest quality) direction. You show as many expensive, fast sports cars as possible so people flipping through the channels will stop and go "ooh...ferrari!" and set it to a soundtrack that viewers of Monster Garage and American Chopper would appreciate. By all measurements, a formula like that should get enough viewers to at least keep the show on the air.
So unfortunately as much as I'd love to see the original episodes aired, I doubt it would happen. But we all can send letters and hope DC will change their ways! [/i]

Discovery Channel sounds good over there.
In the UK, its just TeleShopper (hour long ads) or History stuff.

Anyway, enjoy it! :)

What's funny is that a lot of the cars featured on the Discovery show so far are in fact not marketed in America. Not the Exige, nor the Wildcat, nor the Citroen, nor the Koegnisgegg.

Granted, those are cars (or segments) that do captivate anyone's attention. But this week they aired a full segment about the $5,000 Perodua Kalissa. The cheapest car in Britain. And it was still good. That proves they can just air the original show, people will like it. Don't underestimate American viewers.

Have you tried Auto Gordian Knot (AGK)? So far I haven't had any probs with it. I still need to encode this weeks rip.
