The Apple Silicon discussion and experience thread

QoL improvements with M1 / Apple Silicon have been amazing: silence, instant on/off, power draw, overall responsiveness...
it's like when you switch to fast internet or an SSD for the first time, right? before, you didn't know you were missing it, but once you experience it, you can't go back... pretty much ruins other PCs for you.
Gaming is the only thing missing, but oh well, I haven't been much of a gamer in recent years nayway.
Yeah... same... in my youth I was very much the kid getting too little sleep because I stayed up late playing WoW, CS and the like. And a few friends of mine still do that regularly, even daily. But I just can't be bothered tbh. I don't even know why I have a gaming-capable desktop PC anymore, it doesn't make any sense, if I'm being honest. I don't even want to play anymore, anyway (even if I had the time), there's just too much other stuff I'd rather be doing. Unless you count Zwift as "gaming", I guess, but that also runs on potato, anyway.

I've noticed my M1 MBA waking up when opening the lid faster than I can blink as well. Sometimes I wonder if it wakes up before I open the lid, as soon as it senses that I want to open it. :D

But for some reason (most likely due to screen size and generally being used to it), I gravitate towards my desktop. I've yet to try using the MBA with an external screen (I'm not sure if I want to plug a shitty eBay HDMI adapter in it), but I still need to figure out the way I want to use it with a monitor.

That being said, I've kinda picked up the itch to game again, but that's probably a story for another topic.

Honestly, this is not an Apple Silicon thing. I've been using Macs since the tail end of PowerPC and reliable and fast sleep and wake-up has always been a Mac thing. I've used PowerPC, Intel and Apple Silicon macs and I can't remember ever having a single issue with sleep and wakeup. Everything Just Works.

Meanwhile my work-issued Dell, 2-3 years old or so, repeatedly has issues. I run it closed with dual monitors at the office. I shut it down and unplug it every night and take it home. It usually sits untouched until the next morning when I come in and plug it back in. About five times out of six it works fine. But every now and then it sees the USB-C dock and boots up, but doesn't see the monitors so it just boots to the internal screen while closed. So I have to unfold it, unplug it, replug it, wait for it to figure out what's what and see the monitors, close the lid and then slap the AnyKey™ to prod it to wake back up from the sleep it just went to when I closed the lid. At which point it has to rearrange itself again because it just went from three screens to two.

This is the kind of BS Mac users never have to deal with. We have other kinds of BS but not this kind.

I went through the same thing three years ago.

I basically fell off the gaming bandwagon around the time games like World of Warcraft came out, the type of games that take over your life, so to speak. So having a powerful gaming rig has become less and less important to me. Back in 2010 I was tired of my Dell laptop acting up, so I purchased a MacBook Air, which I kept and used all the way up to the point I bought it's M1 replacement three years ago. After about half a year I found myself not using my Windows desktop PC anyways, so I sold it off, as the second had prices for its components were very high back then, it contained an EVGA GTX 1080 among other things.

I am now using my M1 MacBook Air mostly like I would use a desktop, hooked up to an external display through a simple Hyperdrive 6-in-1 Thunderbolt hub, and with a bluetooth keyboard (Logi MX Keys) and mouse (Logi MX Master 3). Whenever I'm out, I'm simply using my iPad mini, so if that were to get a proper external display support, then the Mac might be sold off as well...

Meanwhile, I have a work laptop that has all of the usual Windows PC annoyances. Lots of random fan noise all the time spooling up the fans for nothing, it's slow at responding to things, battery life is pathetic, and there are just so many infuriating random faults, like how it takes so long to connect to my WiFi at home whenever I'm working from home.

Back when I exclusively used a MBP (Intel) and an external USB-C monitor, I had to send the MBP away for battery replacement and didn't have a computer for about a week. I just plugged my iPad into the monitor, paired my BT keyboard and mouse and used it as a makeshift desktop.

It's not anywhere near great but it does work. It mirrors the internal screen in 4:3 and the iPadOS GUI is still not great for anything other than one app at a time. You can tell the video output is meant for presentation use because when you open an image from the camera roll it just displays it on the external display in fullscreen with no GUI. It goes from display mirroring to dual monitor/presentation mode and back again when you back out into the camera roll.

You can tell how Apple is trying their absolute hardest to NOT make the iPadOS GUI into a "computer" GUI". The mouse pointer is a circle instead of an arrow, it snaps to various buttons and things and the various multitasking features like stage manager (or whatever it's called), split screen and slideover just feel silly to me. I know there are people that use their iPads for everything but I'm not one of them.

For me it's the big black bars on both sides (my screen is an ultra wide 21:9), and the fact it won't work with the iPads display locked that kills it. If it got an external display support like a Mac, it would take over for it.

This is so bad, Apple may be the first company knocked out of the trillion dollar club, even if it is only temporary.

Need to see how bad software patch will be, but looks like it needs a hardware fix...

Earlier this week, Apple had an event dedicated to the iPad.

It was about time, as last year the iPad for the first time since its introduction in 2010 went through, a whole year without seeing any updates to the lineup. We got a brand new impossibly thin iPad Pro with an amazing new display and new super efficient M4 chip, besides some other features, with a noticeable price hike. Besides the new pros, both sizes of the old iPad pros, M2 chips and all, essentially became the new 11 and 13 inch iPad Air, and the 10th gen. iPad got a price cut.

What the heck is Apple doing? They are shipping iPads with such incredibly powerful hardware, yet it's only running iPad OS, essentially a big screen optimized iOS. There is so little currently in iPad OS that can even remotely take advantage of the M-series chips, that I don't understand why they even bother. For the iPad with all its impressive hardware to make any sense, I think Apple needs to comprehensively overhaul iPad OS to take advantage of the hardware.

In my opinion, the only iPad that currently makes any sense is the iPad mini, as that trades on the iPads most important selling point of compact size, and it doesn't pretend to be a half arsed attempt at making a replacement for a laptop, with it's overly limited OS. Am I missing something here? Is the iPad just a brilliant computer for a user group I simply don't understand?

This 100%. Make the iPad run macOS with optional touch interface and the magic that is the pencil. Boom. I’d drop their ridiculous price without even having to think a second about it. But like this? Complete waste of insanely gorgeous hardware…

Is the iPad just a brilliant computer for a user group I simply don't understand?
To be fair to Apple: I could do 100% of my current Job on iPadOS without any issue. But I’d FEEL limited nonetheless by this would never consider actually doing it…

Apparently they sell 2x-3x more iPads than laptops. I have to assume at least a good chunk of those people prefer the streamlined iPad OS experience, and aren't just suffering through it for the form factor...right? 🤔

I just did and experiment:

I specced out a 13" iPad Pro with 1Tb of storage and a Magic Keyboard came out at $2,250, while a 13" MacBook Air with 16 GB Ram and 1Tb of storage came out at §1,699, so a $550 price difference to get a touch screen and a much more limited OS. And for the time being an M4 chip, with theoretically better performance on paper, but still running that very limited OS. Also, I compared it to a MacBook Air, as that's the closest matched one on specs, for a similar price you can get a 14" MacBook Pro with an upgraded M3 Pro.

In my opinion, this just reeks of bad value. You have to really want that touch screen... But what do I know, illustrators though may want to add that $130 Apple Pencil Pro...

I have an old 11-inch iPad Pro. The first one with Face ID, I think. For me it's a single-tasking content consumption device, and one I usually use hours every day and can't see going without. But to actually get something done on it is a bit like leading a cow up a spiral staircase. I'm sure it can be done, but there are probably easier things in the world. File management is still mostly a pain, etc. Over the years I have collected productivity apps like Microsoft Office and the Affinity suite, but trying to use them feels forced and unnatural. The multitasking view, whatever it's called, that came out a few years ago got an "ew." reaction from me when I tried it once.

But, over the last 35 years or however long it's been since I started using computers with Windows 3.1, less knowledgeable people have been using words like "I've got that text saved in Microsoft Word". I get the itches whenever someone says something like this, because no, you haven't saved it "in Word", you've saved a Word file on your hard drive. Because these people open Word, click the Open icon and find their document which they think is stored inside word because the Word Open dialog defaults to the Documents folder with the filter to show .docx only. They don't know what a file or a hard drive even is. And the iPad (and iOS) caters to them.

The other day I also saw someone posting pictures of their house renovations in a facebook group. These were screenshots of the gallery app on iPhone. No idea why but I guess someone learned how to do something their own way. It's not the first time either. And at least it wasn't a picture of a scratched 7 year old smartphone screen.

And that type of thinking has just been there. Though i don‘t think its not such a bad thing as not everyone is going to learn the ins and outs of computer file systems, much like myself with car stuff. I know the basic idea, but thats it. Yeah, referring to saving the file in a program is wrong, but like you explained, thats how it’s presented to them.

I had an iPad for a little while and i could only find one task it did better at than a laptop. That was being a remote control for a Yamaha LS9 mixing console i used to work with. The windows app was much more detailed but difficult for remote mixing as it wasn’t so easy to be precise. But having a €450 remote and used once a week felt like a poor investment. I like the idea of an ipad, but to me its still just a bigger iPhone.

I have a 1st-gen iPad Air that I use for reading .pdf files only. Granted, there's not much it can (still) do, but I can't justify getting a newer/better iPad. Sure, having a pencil support would be nice, if I knew how to draw. But I can't really find any tasks I could do on it that I can't do with my iPhone or MacBook. It probably does some things better than any of those two devices (media consumption and photo editing on-the-go come to mind), but that's not enough for me to justify getting a new iPad.

I have a 12 year old iPad Air which I still use every day for stuff like dumb games, reading books/ comics, and the occasional browse.
It's still PERFECT despite being (in tech terms) a dinosaur. Yeah it cost like 700€ when new, but as it has performed flawlessly over more than a decade and still got updates until last year, I see no point in replacing it with something that's twice (or thrice) the cost, with no real visible benefits? It still is INCREDIBLE value.

Only thing that has deteriorated is the battery, obviously, but even then I can easily get through multiple days with one charge (something my 2023 HP laptop can't manage)
Reading the above, indeed only the mini iPad makes sense now.... I'd prefer a laptop for doing actual work (because keyboard, and multitasking, etc)

that's the thing... if iPadOS weren't so (artificially) restricted and allowed more of a macOS experience, I think it'd be a great laptop replacement together with the keyboard. I'd love to try that, actually... but with iPadOS as it is: HUGE BAG OF NOPE.
... even my old 11" iPad Pro with the A12X or whatever the hell SOC was in there way back then would probably still deliver more than enough power for most of the work I do (except for multitasking around a lot and absolute garbage MS office memory usage).

So, WWDC was today...

Is it just me, apart from Apple Intelligence, was there anything interesting unveiled today? MKBHD finally got his iPad calculator (capable of solving complete math problems, which is kind of neat), so yay, at least he is happy, but for everyone else? I think my point about the iPads still stands: Out of the current iPad range, only the base iPad and the iPad mini makes sense, the rest are just over powered and way over priced for the limited software they run...
