The Aviation Thread [Contains Lots of Awesome Pictures]

I seriously dont believe the B1-R will make it off the blue pages, iirc the DOD or USAF wanted a new bomber in the next decade that can also do the job of the AC-130 ie similar airframe

I don't know it just seems like a relatively easy upgrade especially with a good chunk of the F-22s being canceled.

Everything I know about START and the B-1B is that the B-1B lost its nuclear capability it can still use its external hardpoints just not for nuclear cruise missiles and can't carry any other nuclear weapons. There is some contradictory information online about that though. It has been a long time since I read START so maybe I am remembering it wrong. Conventional weapons on hardpoints should be fine just no nuclear ones. Air to Air weapons should also be fine which is what I guess the B-1R is supposed to use.

Even with the current fleet the air force can reach anywhere in the world very quickly. The variety of aircraft currently flying means that just about any conceivable situation is covered by the capabilities of at least one plane. Investing that much money into a program that wouldn't appreciably enhance the capabilities of the air force just seems silly. Back when the B-1 was being developed the extra speed would definitely have been worthwhile, but not today.

Speaking of re-engined planes, this one is very much worth it:

The C-5M Super Galaxy. It now has about 20% more thrust, a 30% shorter takeoff roll, and a 60% better climb rate.

What i read some time ago was that START also limits the amount it can carry that passes the limits with the hardpoints used.

I dont recall it being clear as to whether they can modify the hardpoints for the remaining non nuclear munitions

you forgot one thing, that's badass, i've seen a C5 up close, hory shit

Given how hopelessly out-specced the F-35 is they'll need all the help they can get.

And what Kajun said as well.

I know it's already been posted, but at the Pitt football game Saturday, I saw one of these above the city

First time I've seen one flying. Obviously, watching that was very very much more important than watching football.

I think i saw one vaguely fly pass way back in 1996, during the Asian Aerospace when it was still in Singapore. The other more prominent memory was hearing a new 'type' of sound and seeing 2 F-15s fly above me (big, distinctive tail shape), which was a few years back too, probably when our Air force was trialing the F-15E.

The B-1R will never happen. When Reagan and Co. bought the B-1's back in the 80's they didn't buy enough spares to go with it so now the USAF either has to canibalize planes or have parts made on a one off basis.

Damn, was that this weekend? I never know what's going on in this city off campus. Except that the tiger at the Zoo had cubs.

I hate you Americans. You get so many airshows whilst we get 1 decent one every 2 years.....

Strangely, I never know what's going on on-campus, but have a reasonable idea of some stuff off it.

More pictures for you, then!

The 2 Smithsonian museums alone are worth the trip. I've been to the original Air and Space Museum several times and the Dulles Annex twice.

It's a nice confidence booster when instead of constantly telling you what to do your flight instructor is taking photos of the scenery with his phone and even has you turn to get better angles on the beaches :p

That confidence wasn't just an illusion either; he said that if the weather holds I should solo (again) within the next week or two. Sweeeeeeeeeet!!

Meanwhile in Russia.
