The Aviation Thread [Contains Lots of Awesome Pictures]

Interspecies breeding?

No, 747's and a few other planes were built with the ability to carry a spare engine, however on most planes that capability has been removed. External engine carriage was never very common and is almost unheard of today. The idea was that not every airport would have a spare engine you might need so if you had a plane stuck somewhere another regularly scheduled plane could just drop off the replacement engine. However today with parts sharing it has generally gone away. It did increase drag and so was an expensive way to ship an engine.

The biggest reason for external engine ferry capability was that the cargo aircraft of the time either weren't large enough internally for the engine to fit, or the cargo doors were too small for the engine to fit through. These days, most engines are designed to have the fan split from the core for shipping, which makes the job a lot easier. Also, the proliferation of 747Fs and An-124s makes shipping full engines, even big ones like the GE90, rather simple.

Of note, there was never a twin-engine airliner with external ferry capability; it is too dangerous in an engine-out scenario.

BBC News - Man jailed after Northumbria Police pilot dazzled

BBC said:
A South Tyneside man who shone a laser pen at a Northumbria Police helicopter has been jailed.

Richard Oliver, of St Vincent's Street in South Shields, repeatedly targeted the craft from his garden, forcing the pilot to divert from the planned route.

Oliver was jailed for six months for the offence, and a further six for breaching a suspended sentence.

He had earlier admitted shining a light at an aircraft in flight so as to dazzle or distract the pilot.

I am now more envious of you than I was before.

I am now more envious of you than I was before.

Well thanks, I guess, but believe me, you envy is somewhat misplaced...at least, it feels that way right now. It's a bit before four in the morning and I'm just about to head out the door for work. Today, I get the pleasure of flying my usual hour long trip north, where I get to sit around the airport for almost eight hours, before I get to fly home. I've done this sort of thing thirteen of the last fourteen days, and everything is starting to feel like "Groundhog Day"; in fact, that damned Sonny and Cher song was cheerfully played by my alarm clock this morning. All in a day's work... :/

I'm not too far behind you. Take my multi-engine commercial checkride next week, then its job hunting while I do my CFI training. My buddy who's flying CRJs for US Airways Express has been telling me the joys of "Hot Reserve" and the accompanying sweetness of being a regional pilot...

I envy both of you having the money to complete pilot training....

PPL will be a must-get once I have some income. TBH I'm still a little scared taking-off and landing, but then I'm no professional pilot.
