I feel I may be pushing my luck with this one, but it's worth a shot.

Just beautiful.

Charles Parsons's Turbina. This is the first steam turbine boat, and he used it to promote his steam turbine company by buzzing the Royal Navy at the queen's jubilee.

I think this thread needs some true class to balance all this nouveau-riche, Russian oligarch-style vulgarity........

It's even more :jawdrop: in person when sailing next to it, seen it numerous times during trials or warranty repairs because it's been built here.

Also awesome because it's ours:

Does anybody remember seeing images of a luxury yacht that was a former research vessel? It had a bay in the rear of the craft with some other boats stored inside...like an ornate landing craft and some jet skis?

I've seen her in Norfolk, Virgina once. Very mean looking ship but she is very limited compared to the rest of the worlds modern warships (can't produce her own fresh water, lots of redundancy in the electronics because they suck and constantly break, pretty much an obsolete missile battery and no real damage control).

So while we're on about boats, I was always curious as to the difference between a Destroyer, a Battleship, and a Cruiser, and why a battleships are considered "obsolete" now. I'm completely ignorant about ships, so I could be completely wrong about the obsolete bit :p

In basic terms, destroyer, battleship, and cruiser are small, large, and medium. Cruisers and destroyers are still around because they are relatively cheap and can carry as much destructive power in their missiles as battleships used to, so there's really no point in building a massive ship unless you can get something useful out of that size, like carrying aircraft. The main selling points of battleship, specifically heavy armor and big guns' have been made somewhat obsolete first by aircraft and then by missile technology.

It was for sale actually. Not too sure if it is, but if you have to ask the price.....

If you can't afford to buy your own ship there are companies out there specializing in cruises on tall ships. Now that's something I would love to do and I would much rather go on a sailing ship than some mega huge resort on water.
