The awesome boats thread

I have never been into boats, exept the big military ships for obvious reasons , until 2 years ago we where on a ferry in the middle off the night in wat was a big storm for Northsee standards.
Everyone was getting sick and lightly scared as the floating brick trashed about, I for some reason loved it, and eversince I would like to own a small pleasureboat :p

How about the Norwegian Skjold Class Patrol boats?

Looks like something from command and conquer

So they needed the big flat surface on top to make sure they where a big enough target from the air right? :p

Kinda hard to get that off the boat...

How do they get the car out?

The same way a normal ferry gets cars out i assume :|

Considering it costs around 7 million pounds, you'd likely be in someplace like Monaco where im sure there are other people who ferry their cars in yachts. All you need is a ramp to drive off.

There is a crane, normally used to lift the more standard smaller powerboat in and out of the garage.

So while we're on about boats, I was always curious as to the difference between a Destroyer, a Battleship, and a Cruiser, and why a battleships are considered "obsolete" now. I'm completely ignorant about ships, so I could be completely wrong about the obsolete bit :p

Ship designations are confusing and often contradictory for political reasons many countries operate ships that are large and powerful but call them Destroyers to help sell them to politicians or appease neighbors (the Japanese Hy?ga class helicopter Destroyers and the South Korean King Sejong the Great, or Death Star).

Back in the old days Destroyers were small ships, that were escorts for larger ships that were designed to destroy Torpedo Boats (the 1900 equivalent of a bass boat with some guys with RPG's) close to enemy shore. U-boats became more of a threat so the Destroyers became larger to counter that threat, then aircraft became a threat so again they grew, missiles and electronic sensors came about so yet again the ships grew. Today a Destroyer is a multi-mission ship that while an escort in US Navy terms is a main line warship to everyone else. Most modern destroyers are larger than a WW2 era Cruiser, realistically the US Burkes, Japanese Atago and South Korean Death Stars are all pretty much Cruisers in everything but name.

In the USN the only real difference between a Cruiser and a Destroyer is the extra room and consoles for an embarked Admiral and his staff, smaller ships don't have this room and while an embarked Commander can squeeze on a Burke the CIC is uncomfortably crowded.

Battleships are WW2 relics, fairly fast and heavily armored. Battleships became obsolete for several reasons. The big Soviet anti-ship missiles (the size of a medium aircraft) would just punch through it anyway, smaller missiles follow a flight path that would hit in area's other than the armored belt or go down the stacks to explode in the engine room, when hit the armor is a hindrance it is just dead weight. Radar, Electronic Warfare, and missiles have replaced armor in ship protection.
The Iowa class was recommissioned in the 80's because they could carry more Armored Box Launched Tomahawk missiles than any other non-aircraft carrier the upgrade was very limited and if the upgrade was over budget the plans were to leave the big guns inoperable. Once a decent number of VLS equipped Ticonderoga's and Spruance's were around the Iowa's were again tossed back in mothballs.

Big boats are too big.

Here's something actually attainable that I could enjoy for multiple purposes.

Labcoatguy & jasonof2000. You guys are awesome. Thanks for the explanations! It all makes a bunch more sense to me now, and is really really interesting. I have cool some stuff to talk my dad about hehe :)

Also obligatory, the Yamato

Meh, while it had some crazy guns and was an engineering marvel, it was completely worthless and got it's ass kicked hard by airplanes. If anything, it showed how dead battleships were. Case in point: it didn't even make it to Okinawa which it was sent to on a one-way trip to defend.

This is the awesome thread for ships, and the only thing more awesome than a capital ship is a fleet of capital ships. :p

An awesome ship is one that completed its primary purpose, not one that was killed before it could fire its main guns in anger. The Yamato was useless, the Japanese should of put the resources into more carriers than that white elephant.

They weren't able to outbuild us, so they decided to build a ship that could take on multiple ships. That's all well and good except for the fact aircraft carriers were the future of naval warfare.

Hey, shut up! I like it here! Good on the Japanese for building the Yamato. :p
