The awesome boats thread

Besides the carrier Shinano (which was a Yamato class converted to an aircraft carrier) was sunk during it's sea trials by a single submarine.

Meh, while it had some crazy guns and was an engineering marvel, it was completely worthless and got it's ass kicked hard by airplanes. If anything, it showed how dead battleships were. Case in point: it didn't even make it to Okinawa which it was sent to on a one-way trip to defend.

Correction: It was the Yamato vs 11 fleet carriers and around 400 Aircraft and it still took them 3 waves of separate attacks to finally sink the yamato.
In the face of overwhelming air (and prepared sea) power it held it's ground reasonably well. Besides that US intelligence deciphered Operation Ten-Go orders way before Yamato even set sail.

Hell, it took the Royal Air Force years to sink the stationary Tirpitz in its fjord mooring and they had to use huge dambuster Tall Boy bombs to do it.

I'm sorry Battleships in general are over rated, the Yamato and the Iowa's especially.

The "Tin Can's" such as the Fletcher class are much more awesome considering what they've done during WW2 than any other class of ship (with the exception of the CV-6 USS Enterprise).

Hell just what Taffy 3 went through shows how awesome a destroyer force can be.

Probably one of the most one sided naval battles in history with a small escort force set up for shore bombardment and troop support facing off against 10 Japanese capital ships (including the beloved Yamato).

Formula Jet Sprint Boats... god i love these things...

How many Gs are those formula jet sprint boats pulling. It looks like the footage is sped up.

and another cool but now scrapped ship:

I live about an hour uprivier from Astoria (Oregon side) and Cape Disappointment (Washington side). Those waves get quite crazy.

How useful is the pool if you have to jump into the ocean first anyway. Might as well just stay in the ocean then.

When I buy a yacht, I'm going to make sure there's room for an apache gunship.

Think this:

But with a more epic yacht. You will DEFINITELY get noticed when you arrive.

Living in BC, I always love going back and forth between the mainland and the island, and this is one of the reasons why commuting is never boring getting there and back

You may note that the Apache is a tail-sitting aircraft, so if you did try to land it on that yacht it would fall backwards into the sea.

Glad to see that The Maltese Falcon was already posted.

Seriously guys? No love for Christina O the first mega-yacht in the world? She started out life as a Canadian frigate, was converted by Onassis to be his personal yacht. Upon his death he willed the ship to the Greek government to use as the Presidential yacht, but the ship was "misplaced" and floated with a few other surplus ships for years. She was rediscovered, bought back by a friend of the Onassis family, restored, converted from steam to diesel and is now sailing again.

Oh, did I mention she was at D-Day and pulled convoy-escort duty across the Atlantic in WWII? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christina_O

She's a war veteran now living the good life.

I'd love to do the same thing with a US WWII Destroyer Escort. I've always loved those ships.

I didn't know that about the Christina O that is pretty awesome.

I actually came here to post the Maltese Falcon yesterday but it was already up. Very cool ship there. Would love for someone to really try that concept to make cargo ships like the Falcon's original concept was based on.

An AH-64 has an empty weight of some 12,000 lbs. You're gonna need a bigger boat.

A better bet for a bad ass helicopter to land on your mega yacht would be a Cobra or Super Cobra.

They have been out long enough that surplus units are around. Some are being used by the forest service right now and they have an empty weight of around 6,000 lbs plus they aren't tail landers.

how do you achieve this without taking the whole ship apart?

They probably did have to cut into the hull or the deck to do the work. Be interesting to see exactly how they did it but most likely they had to eventually open up the deck to get the steam turbines and boilers out.

^the old things you can cut in small pieces to get out

but i can't imagine hauling a ships diesel engine down the stairs

Put in dry dock and cut a big enough hole in the side.

Fletcher Class Destroyers are the definition of awesome. These were a big part of the reason that any convoys were able to make it across the Atlantic at all.
