The BBC answers!

Well, the problem here is the lisense fees. Thats what the BBC cares about. A simple solution is to ask BBC what it would take (money wise) to allow this site to operate. I know it isnt what any of us wanted, but it would be a means to keep this site operating. Going by the BBC's logic, if we pay then it is fair. The question is how much that is.

REALLY!>???? You have to pay to watch free (well not now) to air TV.

Can't you simply buy an antenna and a TV set and watch BBC??????

well... its mainly because BBC is a government supported company and hence there are no commericals on their shows, so the only way to make profits from the channel is charged viewers a license fee

but damn... this kinda sucks

Not quite that simple, since they would want us to pay enough money that they would be able to offset the amounts they get from other networks that might be affected by the devaluation of their product. For example, if discovery caught wind that most of their american viewers were getting their top gear from here, discovery wouldn't pay as much for the rights to show it. So basically we would have to provide the total amount of revenue they make from syndicating it to other television networks for them to let us do that. That number is probably much higher than many of us could afford to pay (probably in the millions).

that really sucks, but this is the fact, isn't it, they get their own reasons, and we get ours
however, all what I concerned is that the FinalGear will stay here still
:)

now, thinking of this, I was thinking that if we could post on the BBC America and BBC Canada many requests for them to show top gear, they actully might do that ... that is, uncut, recent and unedited. But it might be a long-shot.

Ok, anyone up for flooding their websites with requests/suggestions ?

When it comes to covering licensing fees, a person better have deep pockets. It's normally expensive stuff. And I don't know if the BBC would go for it anyhow. Maybe if this site were streaming the shows, but downloading is another thing (even though the episodes weren't being downloaded directly from here, but Final Gear was supposidly 'facilitating' the downloads, but that's a whole big bag of worms in itself with all the gray area involved).

So it's not really worth the hassle in my opinion. We'll just have to use mininova.

Well, why don't we all tell the BBC and Clarkson to go to hell and contunie to share.

Because it's easier to ban dissident users, comply to their requests, and allow the kickass forums here to stay up. Give it some thought - that was a rather stupid comment :x

I'm with hokie and SiR. I'm more than happy to pay the TV license fees (that's what? ?120/year?) so to satisfy BBC. But I wish it's that simple. BBC sells TG to the Discovery Channel, Prime TV in AU/NZ and others. BBC also gets its tiny share from Cable/Satelite providers who airs BBC World for its 1/2-hour version.

As far as suggesting BBC America and BBC Canada to air TG. We can certainly *try*. But I don't think they'll change. BBCA & BBCC have gotten so rotten these days, they've practically become another Home & Gardening channel. Judging by the advertisers on BBCA (I swear if I see another home medic alert or hospital bed commercial, I'm gonna #$@#$@...), I just don't think they can ever afford licensing TG.

Torrenting is never going to be accepted by the BBC. We all owe Viper for providing a place for us to discuss our favorite program. The best thing for us to do (to keep us, especially Viper out of trouble) is to comply. We tell BBC that finalgear.com no longer offers downloads to full episodes and will remain solely as a discussion forum for fans. We probably should remove the hyperlink and any references to mininova.org on the front page as well.

[We all know about mininova by now ;). We will still get our Top Gear; it just won't be as easy as before. Live with it. It's all an underground operation and it should stay underground.]

whoa bud, chill. That kind of attitude won't solve a thing.

Well peaople should stop acting like litte girls. Why should we bow to the big, fat, filthy rich corporations like the BBC when we can keep sharing torrents. Comment like SiR_dude's can only discourage people and ruin everything.

Hey, just chill... What didn't you understand on you getting your fix on mini nova? And those big, fat, filthy rich corporations sure can bother to put some lawsuits on some guys who aren't willing to spend money or lose time so some other guys can get car videos... And this discussion has gone, and gone, and gone... And the conclusion is the same. No Top Gear torrents on the site.

I can understand your frustration. We're all bummed about this. But telling the BBC and JC to go to hell isn't exactly a mature or constructive comment on the surface. Afterall, they are the ones who produce the show we enjoy so dearly and we wouldn't have any Top Gear at all if it weren't for them. But I now realize this was just you're way of saying "Let's just keep sharing no matter what", however, you could have phrased it differently as to avoid confusion.

And we've already established on another 20+ page thread that we will continue to share, just not directly on this site. So this topic is pretty much just a dead horse that is begging to be buried at this point.

The cease and desist was legit. So does that really change anything as far as other torrent sites go? The answer is no. If the BBC has a problem with those torrent sites, that isn't our problem. what more can be said?

I think you should take a sec and re-read what you just post.... of course it would be in everyone's favour for viper to keep releasing torrents, but then he would be putting everything at stake, some way or another, viper would still do his best to release the episodes ASAP...

To clarify for all you guys:

1. By seying keep sharing I never meant throuth finalgear. Its more than clear to me that this is imposlible.

2. My point was exavtly what jeffy777 is saying and I don't see why wee need the rather discoraging comments and post like the ones I was critisizing on first place.

3. The original "go to hell" post was more for those from BBC reading this to undestand that regular people still count for something.

Hrmmm... what if the commercials were kept in the downloads? I guess we could still fast forward through them but that's just like TiVo or taping it by VCR.
