I know a guy from high school who went from a devote Catholic to a Christian Fundamentalists. From him I've heard the wondrous inanity of their side regarding the issue. According to them granting homosexuals the use of the word marriage is an attack against the First Amendment because it would offend Christians. And no that isn't the stupidest thing I've heard from them, that awards goes to the theory that procreation will cease in the U.S. if homosexuals are allowed to marry.

Also, I want to say something about how biased the poll wording is, but the only arguments I've seen against gay marriage rights use vague but nice-sounding terms like "values", slippery-slope analogies, or selectively quoting verses from various religious texts.

How in FSM's name is it biased? It pretty much sums up the standpoint of just about everyone I know or hear of. Either they are strongly in favour, don't give two hoots or are against for strongly religious or other reasons.

Well, for starters, if you're homosexual and want to get married one day, which option do you choose? The first choice is the correct position, but "It doesn't affect me" is most definitely not your reason for choosing it. If you're looking to gauge positions, the poll shouldn't presume the reasons behind choosing them. It should have just been "I think it's wrong" "I don't think it's wrong" and "I don't have strong feelings either way", with people providing the reasons for their choice in the comments.

EDIT: also, the language you used sets up the poll choices as "Correct choice, apathetic choice, wrong choice with rationalization, wrong choice for confused person". As much as you and I consider the first to be the correct choice, it's disingenuous to present someone else's views as objectively wrong if you're looking for a serious discussion.

Good news, homosexuals can now marry in WA (opposed to only being allowed a civil union).

Marvellous.

I almost voted against gay marriage on my Maryland ballot. It had exemptions for churches not to honor the marriages. Now I'm all in favor of a church not wanting to perform a marriage but the proposal as written on my ballot said religious groups would be allowed to discriminate based on their "faith".

I think that means that a church can't be forced to by law to HAVE to preform a marriage ceremony.

Which I agree with, if that's the essence of it.

I mean, if I'm saying that the church has no business telling me who I can or cannot marry based on their beliefs...then I have no right to force a church to do the ceremony based on MY religious (or lack thereof) beliefs.

It goes both ways. No pun intended.

QFT.

I totally support individual churches/religions/tenets of faith in choosing not to perform the ceremonies but I stand by this: telling someone else they shouldn't get married because of what your faith teaches is like telling someone they can't have a steak because you're a vegetarian.

Since this issue is currently being debated in the House of Commons there are some interesting "stats" floating about with regard to views and opinions in general.

Once of which states that the more straight pr0n hetero guys watch the less opposed they become to the idea of homosexuality and gay marriage.

Given the voting on here we must be a right bunch of lonely nerds who fap a lot.

Wait, wut?

My hypothesis:

- Watching more porn means you've looked for more porn.
- Looking for more porn exposes you to a larger variety of it as you look for fresh material.
- The more variety you've seen, the more likely you are to have seen something that strikes a chord with you and makes you rethink yourself a little bit. This curiosity about yourself makes you read up more about sex-related things.
- Learning more about sex and about yourself shows you more points of view and increases your confidence in yourself, so you become more open minded.

Tl;dr: Look at cocks enough, and you start to like them.

:p

Or at least stop being afraid of other people's.

It does make me wonder though. If I meet a guy who is in favour of gay marriage I then have to decide whether he is enlightened or simply an utter wanker.

Parliament just legalized gay marriage! If abolition's any indication the US has 32 years to catch up.

Not yet. It's on the way but no certainty.

Thanks for the clarification; I was under the impression that the House of Lords is a ceremonial rubber-stamper and isn't likely to go against the Commons.

In this case I would be surprised if it did.
