What type of crosshair would you be looking for? Mildot is a classic favorite, but some people prefer different methods of rangefinding and adjusting for distance. Also, what's the budget?

I have no personal experience with them, but I've heard good things about the SWFA SS series.

I like the Mildot that my brother has on his Nightforce, I like being able to adjust fire quickly without using the adjustment knobs. I'd like to keep it under $500 with the mounts and scope. That's one of the reasons I think the M-308 might be ok, it comes with the mounts.

This is where I'd be leaning as well. They're a screaming deal in optics and tough as hell being a design that used to be used by the SEALs.

Here's one version: http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-10x42-Tactical-30mm-Riflescope-P500.aspx

Sometimes they have package deals, where you can get the scope and all the accessories such as mounts, sunshade, etc., for not much more than the scope itself. Not at the moment, alas.

Those all look like fixed-zoom, I was hoping for something where I can start at closer range and then start pushing it out.

Nope, they're not all fixed zoom (read additional stuff above, too) though most are. Fixed magnification has some advantages over variable magnification - with mildots, a fixed power scope can actually be used to identify the range faster than a variable power one. With enough experience you can estimate range without even using the mildots. Also less to break and less expensive. They're still just as useful at short ranges when they have adjustable focus like these do.

Another well-regarded budget option is the Burris Fullfield II line of scopes. These are made by Pentax of Japan for Burris so the glass is pretty good to start with.

These are 1" tubes and not the newer 30mm standard so they are not as good at light gathering at dusk/dawn or other darker conditions, and they're not built to milspec though they are pretty tough.

This outfit in NYC (ironically) seems to have some screaming deals on demo and closeout scopes on a regular basis. You may be able to get a non-budget scope for a screaming deal - they have Zeiss, Schmidt und Bender, Hensoldt, Leupold - among other big names in optics.

$600 plus $200 for rings is pretty spendy. I was hoping to keep it a bit lower than that.

Like I said, SWFA runs specials on a regular basis, which is when it's an even better idea to get them. The fixed mag ones are half the price of the variable mag ones, BTW.

If you just don't want a fixed power scope at that price point and you do not want to wait, just get this:

With some Burris Xtreme (yeah, yeah, stupid name) rings of the correct height, you'll still be able to check most of the boxes, with the exception of twilight shooting, and still come in at your budget point.

No no no no.

Shooting everything related to those sparkly vampires is a priority.

I'm thinking the Nikon M-308 will be what I get for the M1A. It's about $500 at Cabela's and comes with the mount.

awesome video making fun of all the "Tactical-as-F**K, tier-1 Operator Mall Ninja firearm instructors" out there.

Rick Taylor is also funny:

Anyone got an opinion of the Canik L120 or S120?

CZ-75B copies, can be had from Bud's Gunbroker account for about $320 for the S120 (steel frame) or more for the L120 (alloy frame)
