The Heart Attack Grill in Chandler, Arizona

The Heart Attack Grill is a hospital-themed restaurant in Chandler, Arizona, which has become famous for embracing and promoting an unhealthy diet of extremely large hamburgers.

Customers are referred to as "patients," orders as "prescriptions," and the waitresses as "nurses".

"Patients" wear medical gowns, and their orders are written on on tags worn around their wrists.

The restaurant's waitresses dress in sexy retro nurses' uniforms.

The restaurant has been criticised for its portrayal of nurses. Its website features a disclaimer: "None of the women pictured on our website actually have any medical training, nor do they attempt to provide any real medical services"

The concept of the Heart Attack Grill has been described as "nutritional pornography".

The menu includes Single, Double, Triple and Quadruple Bypass Burgers, plus Flatliner Fries cooked in pure lard.

The burgers' names imply coronary artery bypass surgery, and refer to the danger of developing heart disease from the food's high saturated fat and calorie content.

The Quadruple Bypass Burger contains around 8,000 calories (about four times the recommended daily calorie intake for women)

A free wheelchair service is offered to "patients" who finish a Quadruple Bypass Burger.

Customers weighing over 350 lb (160 kg) eat for free if they weigh in before each burger.

The restaurant was founded in December 2005 by Dr Jon, who has published a "fitness" book: How to Eat, Drink and Smoke Your Way to Better Health.

And they were doing so well until they got to this bit...

Can I just have my quadruple burger and have done with it? And don't bother filling it with onions, either, red or any other colour - that's asking to ruin what's otherwise a fine creation.

The grill fights back! I approve of chips that are unsuitable for vegetarians. In fact, I'm tempted to fry my next batch of poppadoms in lard and see how they turn out.

Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

I've a way to go before I crack that barrier... though 99% of me hopes I never do.

Even then, I might take a look if I'm ever in that part of Arizona. Doubt I ever will be, though, as it's about 30? too hot to stay alive.

And if I'm ever there I will introduce them to my 32-rasher bacon sandwich.

Never heard of it. I might have to check it out sometime.

But.... but... I'm too young and beautiful to die! :p

I wouldn't mind trying one of those double burgers, but the fries sound gross. Pure lard? *shivers*

Most decent chip shops here, still fry in either lard of beef fat.

Man, I don't even want to know what some places use in their fryers now.

I've never cared much for fried food. When I'm in the mood for a burger, I usually go to In-N-Out, which uses vegetable oil on their fries. Or Carl's Jr (Hardees). Not sure what they use.

My brother has said that he wanted to go there once in his life, he would have liked it when they were in SF back in easter but didn't have time for that kind of trip.

@TomCat as my planed route on my vacation takes me through Phoenix*, that could be the right "sometimes", couldnt it?

* If there is no change in route or timeplan, i'll stay a night in Phoenix on 16th/17th October.

Tomcat, one meal there will not kill you - just remember to have your colon cleansed the next day.;) The Heart Attack Grill seems like the type of place that you should visit at least once, just to say that you've been there. Kind of like Hooters. And frying food in lard is actually healthier than frying food in vegetable oil. No trans fats, don't you know.

Although I am with you on the love for In-N-Out. Animal-style fries FTW!

indeed, not only can it be better for you than other contrived oils...

if you're thinking it, no, it tastes nothing like pig. its a very neutral oil. you may of even had lard-fried foods and not known it.

 Well, I still don't like the sound of "pure lard", but I won't argue.

oh, i agree. the wording doesnt invoke the best of thoughts in most anyone. even i'm guilty of such. i think its just one of those social conditionings we've grown up with.

its like people who still think butter is bad, and margarine is better. even tho science has finally shown (well, "for now" i suppose) that butter is way better than margarine could ever be, many people grow up believing otherwise.

If you guys are willing to pay for the gas, I'll step and take the challenge. They have no idea who they're messing with.

Indeed! I've seen what people in St Louis eat. Pig ear sandwiches, snoots, brain sandwiches - the only St Louis specialty sandwich I've seen that I actually want to try is the St Paul.

How do you put those Burger towers in your mouth anyway? They should just give you 2 burgers instead of 1 mega burger.

8000 calories though? Are they sure they didn't mix that up with kilojoules? That's 10 times the amount in an average pepperoni pizza. You would need to eat roughly 3.2kg of beef pattys to ingest that many calories.
